Nietzsche says it once and I'll say it again. Dime Hunting is dead. There are no more finds out there in my district, when the 2014 dimes hit the boxes, you'll get 1 silver per 15 boxes if you're lucky. Horrible odds. Dawgs, dimes were good while they lasted but, heck, all good things come to an end. At least there are still Customer-Wrapped-Rolls.

RIP silver dimes, I had fond memories of you, I shall never order anotha box again.

Friend's Dad and Dimes and Quarters

I remember the Saturday mornings I would go to my buddy's and hang out. This was around 1964. I was about ten or eleven years old. What I remember most is that their kitchen table would be covered with dimes, quarters and half-dollars. His dad would sort the coins for most of the morning. Those must have been the good times!!

I thought rapper 50 Cent is from the east coast where the land of silver is. Which coast is the OP from?

If you suspect that they are extracting silver from the factory.. one big clue would be the lack of foreign coins also. The machines will however not sort out foreign coins of the same composition like the Balboa for example since it is identical in composition to U.S. coins. For dimes, a good tell tale sign is if there is a lack of British 5 Pences also. I used to get a ton of these in the good old days. I have seen so little in them of late along with zero silver that I find it to be very odd. If you suspect them of sorting out silver at the factory, you need to do more investigating and change coin distributors. If your area uses nothing but one type of coin distributor, you are then stuck, the only way you get silver for face is if you find a job within a bank or the coin sorting facility. Perhaps expose them for coin sorting and report them up the chain of command and get them fired. Thus freeing silver up once again. Personally doing dimes is not worth it in my area since the main vender swapped from clear plastic to paper wrappers which take a lot more time to search. I do search dime boxes occasionally but discovered there's a problem with it now. If they did this sorting with halves, that would be the end of CRHing boxes or pretty much the end of this hobby other than getting CWR which is a pain if you don't have much time to drive around and bother tellers of various banks all day. Keep in mind that the sorters at the factory may be reading this forum since it comes up first on a Google search. My personal recommendation to sorters at the factory reading this is for them not to sort for halves since they do not circulate other than CRHers ordering them which is the only reason they get ordered in the first place. Otherwise they sit around in the factory taking up space. Coin orders equal job security. If no one is ordering coin, coin sorters at the factory will be out of a job. I can imagine during the recessions, that there were less coin orders due to less retail activity. That is why mint productions are down too. Let the searchers search so you guys at the factory will still have a job.

As much as I enjoy reading this forum and many people have benefited from it. It could be the death of CRH too since it will give those at the factory this idea too if they read it. I don't suspect that any sorting out at the factory is done on a mass scale by the government because the government does not care about this but by individuals who get ideas from the internet like here and figure out a way to benefit. As much as I would like to brag, boast, showoff or plain share.. I do not post my totals from CRH. To be honest, although totals in my area are not good, I do not want to give people the wrong idea especially people working at the factory. It's okay to share a nice find every so often but totals nope. I think the OP is correct in not posting his totals either. Just my two cents.

I have been sorting dimes for a few years. I have gone through two boxes recently without finding a silver dime. There is a finite number of silver dimes available. Time to give it a rest. I am changing over to populating Jefferson nickles books for a while. I may start looking for a used metal detector too.

Happy hunting! Acer

I've been getting ridiculously consistent skunks from one supplier. 10+ boxes without even foreign. Then I'll get a bunch of Canadian in one or two boxes- sometimes almost a roll's worth. My guess is someone's picking through the white metal coins and then throwing their rejects back at the end by the handful. I'll even get identical box numbers from two different banks, and I'll get silver out of the other bank's boxes. I have no idea what happened but it sucks.

Anyone care to try to get a part-time job at these facilities like Brinks? Find out who is sorting them out, then snitch on them? So that silver is free to flow again? If I had tons of spare-time, I would just try to get hired, find out who is doing it (someone higher up no doubt), then snitch to corporate, then quit the job. I was told by someone who drove the trucks that they are NOT supposed to be sorting coins for themselves. The only issue with that is when you have the Fox guarding the Hen house, well we know the rest. I will however be actively looking at the local coin facility job openings, wait for my opportunity to consider it. Personally although it would be nice to get some silver dimes or quarters every so often if I worked there, I think it's just better to snitch them out for what they are doing. Perhaps write an anonymous letter to corporate. Find out what facility is sorting out the coins, then complain to corporate about someone there swapping out coins for themselves when they are supposed to be working. Since I would be afraid of retaliation, I am afraid to name names nor myself since the person has a lot of control over the coins, breaking policy, and getting away with it. There's only two coin sorting facilities in the bay area anyhow. One in Hayward area and one I believe is in SF. I can do my own investigation and figure out which one you work at and there will be an investigation, I promise.

The master coin sorter at the facility who is reading this and in my area, if you do not stop your action, I will be writing to corporate about you and have them review camera tape to see who is not doing their jobs but spending wasted time for their personal gain. Who knows what other things you may be up to like stealing money!! The silver needs to flow again in my area. If you grab a few here or there ok but I need to get some keepers too. You cannot keep all to yourself or there will be an investigation, I promise!! Stop your action NOW!!!

It would also be nice to return to clear plastic wraps.

People who work at coin sorting facility's must wear short sleeves and are on camera
24/7 from all directions. On some
Facility's they are
Required to go threw a metal detector before and after each time they leave the facility on there
Shift. They are not allowed to look threw , keep, sort, or remove anything at all PERIOD. They are high security places. It's not just a bunch of
People in a warehouse drinking coffee and hanging around while they work. I was told they are required to use there hand similar to casinos. And the camera set up is similar to casinos. I was told this by someone who works for Dunbar that I personally know.

I was told this by someone that worked for those companies too. But honestly when you have someone higher up like a manager or supervisor doing it, is anyone going to say anything? If you are a lowly teller at a bank and find out your boss is CRHing on the side, are you going to stop him? Fox guarding the Hen house. How else can you explain the lack of silver and foreign coins from certain vendors? Someone or something (if they are using new coin sorters) is sorting the rolls out and apparently the keepers/foreign coins have to go somewhere. I'm not a greedy guy, if they want to keep something here and there, ok I get it but I would like my piece of the pie just as it was years ago. I know some tellers CRH on the side, they've told me, ok I don't have a problem with it but I have to get something too. That's all I ask.

Why not just send an anonymous letter to the company for the specific facility giving out skunk boxes to mention that someone is swapping out coins and not doing what they're supposed to do (ie their jobs)? It should get them to investigate.

I don't care if someone sorts or doesn't sort out silver, it's their prerogative. I prefer they DIDN'T for obvious reasons :-)

I do get concerned, though, when there is no silver, and then the occasional mass of foreign coins. That seems to me that they are keeping what is valuable and throwing back the rejects. It seems like fraud- if you are "selling" these as American currency, and intentionally keeping the valuable and leaving non American currency in the rolls, you are shorting someone- a business, bank, etc.- of the currency you're contracted to provide.

I don't know if that makes sense- what I'm saying- either don't filter and leave all in, including silver, or filter it all out without cherry picking.

Even though I hate foreign coins, they also provide an excellent marker of whether there is any filtering going on. When there is no foreign coins, there will be zero silver.

I would do some research and figure out which vender sells which type of skunk boxes. Figure out where the boxes came from (ie which coin factory). Get the name of the company. Write a "snitch" letter to corporate management, someone high up that does not work at the facility from the perspective of an employee who works there alleging there is inappropriate filtering of coins by employees there which is against policy. Employees playing with and keeping certain coins/money for themselves rather than spending time doing work as they are supposed to and that there should be a review of camera tape (demand an investigation). Mention that because you are afraid of employee retaliation and retribution, you wish to remain anonymous. As a whistle blower, you may also threaten to report it to the Better Business Bureau or the banks that have contracts with the facility.

HAHA, a lot of people butt hurt, because of "what if" someone is filtering out the silver at the factory. Now what if its just all you CRHers filtering it out? i mean come on? you think there is a lot of grandmas and grandpas left with jars of silver dimes and what not at home just waiting to be dumped at a bank? Even silver mines run dry....

Of course there's still silver out there. But the issue is how can one explain the lack of foreign and silver coins in certain boxes from a certain vendor but not the other? Basically there's no more clear plastic rolls in my area so if anything people are less likely to CRH dimes or quarters since the time to go through the boxes take a long time for so little. Because of that, I seriously doubt it because of over CRHing.

Silver is a very expensive commidity nowadays. Of course someone is paid to pilfer silver commercially.
I heard high schoolers are paid part-time by these facilities during the summer.
