Just a fun story for you all here.....
A few years ago, I was hooked on Bob Brewers book. To this day, it is still my favorite treasure story, and by now Ive read hundreds.
So, when I moved out to AZ, I had an opportunity to put some of what he presented to the "test." Meaning: I would take my lack of treasure hunting knowledge and see if I could verify some of the things he wrote about, hopefully learning something in the process. As an engineer, "reverse engineering" is how I learn a lot of things. Anyhow, I did verify some things, and other I didn't, but mostly "didn't" due to my own lack of knowledge.
Moving on: Bob talked about Buzzards Roost quite a bit and I have been there more than a few times. One time, I decided to fly my drone around Buzzards Roost (which is OUTSIDE of the Air Forces no-fly zone around the Sups so, I figured it was alright) to see if that giant star is manmade or just a cool natural occurance. Side note, not 1 local dutch-hunter has taken that star seriously that I know of. Ive shown it to a few and they all say "natural." Maybe they're right......?
Anyway.....
I drove out past Elephant Butte, got within flying distance of the Roost and set up. I flew this thing about 1 minute across the desert towards Buzzard's Roost and then the screen just went black and I had no more control over my drone. I didn't crash it. It was too high up. There was also an "auto return" feature where, if the drone flew out too far or reached a critical battery level, it would fly back to where it took off, automatically. So, when the screen went black, I shit myself first because this was a $2500 drone, but then I waited 30 min to see if it would come back. It didn't. To those who say "you crashed it:" maybe. However, I HAD crashed this before into some Palo Verde and when you crash a drone, the camera doesn't shut off. You can SEE the crash happen on screen. Even if you were to crash hard enough to break the camera, you would still see an initial "jolt." This just went black.
So......after the drone didn't come back I made a plan to return the next day and find it. The drone sent my phone it's gps coordinates so, I knew exactly where the drone lost contact and exactly where it would be if it had fallen.
So.........needless to say, I didn't fly the drone over trails. I flew it over desert. With my bushwacking gear on, I drove out as far as I could, parked up, and started hiking.
I eventually got there and guess what. No drone. No pieces of a crashed drone. No nothing. I believe I didn't crash this drone. Again, you can SEE crashes happen on screen. This just went black and I lost control.
Somebody remotely(?) stole my drone...........and it happened while I was 'investigating' a claimed KGC spot near (not in) a no-fly zone. So.....who was it? Lol
Pic enclosed is the spot the drone went "down." Buzzards Roost is in the back and I am facing west in the pic, high up the side of a mountain looking for a drone or its pieces.
