DFX or Explorer SE?

read his whole post carefully.
He said you are not constantly tweaking or fiddling and it will pick up a coin at 8" in factory settings...

JC, Teverly,
As said :) It's been my observation that alot of users of other detectors are trying to tweak or find settings/programs for their machines to consistently pick up coins past 6-7 inches. The Explorers (I have the XS) pick up coins at that depth or deeper with very little or no need to mess with settings. I run my XS at sens levels of 19-24 with deep on (Very well below the Max of 32) and can pick up coins at 7" no problem. With that said, I'm not trying to open up a can of worms, simply, you do not see Explorer users complaining about not getting depth on coins.
I have all 3 of the explorers and my experience has been the same as yours. When i bought the xs i wa afraid it would be hard to learn. But i was surprised it was actually easier than i thought.
And i was finding coins 7 and 8 deep with the factory settings.
But as others have said, buy what you like and learn it.

Since I have gotten my Explorer back from Minelab I have been finding some fun stuff. I really like the Ex II. It goes deep and it really isn't too hard to learn. But my buddy has been finding good stuff with his XLT too.

I have the "explorer 2" I got a large cent in 14" of soil and leaf matter and a 1962 quarter in 12" of hard packed sand at a volleyball court.
I love having the rechargeable battery, and i HATE having the ring and coin displays when i get a signal, they are often wrong and very needless.

Judging from your screen name, I would say get the Explorer. But if you like more variety in your finds, I would say DFX. So you want silver, then definitely go with one of the models in the Explorer series.

... Maybe this.... Im not trying to sell it ,but i have both minelab exp. and a dfx . And i think this works better ..Maybe its just where i look very trashy areas .. Tons of iron junk and very little gold and silver in the mix ;) Good luck they are all great machines ..

Traded a DFX for the Explorer, traded the Explorer back for the DFX! The DFX luvs pulltabs and won't get as deep in DISC but all around easier to learn and handle. If you can stay away from trash i guess the EXplorer is great, otherwise it will run you crazy with all those tones! You do have to run low DISC to get deep with it. Explorer seems to be built Ford tough, guess thats why it's so heavy. If you buy one you just have to make your mind up that your gonna learn it and use it no matter what! Most that have them say they wouldn't hunt with anything else. I would guess the DD coil is what makes the most difference, so if you go with the DFX get ready to start looking for a Super 12 or one of the White DD to get more depth and they aren't cheap! I just didn't like using the Explorer after using the DFX.

how long did you have the explorer???
I think people buy them and give up on them way to easy.I have no doubt it is harder to learn, but if you only use it for a month or so and give up you really dont know how well the machine works.
i run mine with the disc. sometimes to cut out everything but coins and jewelry.I still find stuff 8" deep with them.
but if you are happier with the DFX good luck.It comes down to what machine you use and feel comfortable with......

The Explorer is a bit on the heavy side, but in my opinion is worth the extra weight and makes your arm feel better after you find something nice. It's built well and I personally do not hear too many stories about them breaking. They come with a rechargeable battery pack that lasts an entire hunt and then some, so you will not be spending money on batteries. Battery cost for an Explorer should be $0.00, unless you're like me and have forgotten to recharge once in a while. i personally found the Explorer not as complicated as it has been made out to be. What I did realize early on though is that the detector is really like no other in the way it sounds, the smartfind screen, etc. Learning it at certain times feels like trying to learn how to use a detector, and as Teverly mentioned, some people give up on them too soon. The Explorer requires that you give it time. Once you begin to understand it, the more you want to learn it and use it. I've had mine for a few months and feel maybe 30-35% acquainted.

i have used the dfx for 2 yrs and my friend uses the explorer, his find rate is far better than mine so i say go for the latter.

Now that I have my machine back and working properly I have to disagree with a few on this post. I love the Explorer. It finds all kinds of things you just have to know how to hunt with it. You have to learn what trash and treasure sounds like but it isn't too bad in my opinion.

I wouldn't give my Explorer up except for maybe and SE.

Spend some time in the "brand" specific forums and please consider the Soveriegn aswell. You could save yourself some money and get what is probably the best nonwaterproof beach machine at the same time. And if you think it's not deep enough with the stock coil, try the WOT coil.
That's it I'm done responding to these kind of threads.

Ah the Xp Goldmaxx Power.
Rayredditch has some good experience with the machine. Ask him is you have questions on it.
About the DFx vs. Explorer I've not used either so won't say anything.

I can't speak for the Explorer, but I love my DFX. You can turn on and go with the factory settings to start, and then learn, read Jeff Fosters book and trial all sorts of settings after that. It's like getting a new detector everyday. That's if you want to learn and have the time to do it.
