If you are new to the hobby of metal detecting, prepare to budget $160.00 - $700.00 for your first metal detector; $10.00 - $45.00 for a pair of kneepads; $30.00 - $100.00 for a digging tool; $110.00 - $140.00 for a hand-held pinpointer; $10.00 - $20.00 for gloves; $10.00 - $20.00 for a Finds Bag & Belt. Let's say $350.00 - $1,000.00 should cover it depending on the equipment you choose.

When you choose your equipment, keep the type of treasure you are looking for - and where you are trying to find it at the top of your mind. If you are looking for gold nuggets in the desert, your detector and digging tool will be vastly different than if you were searching a saltwater beach for gold and silver jewelry and coins. Just want to go to local parks, woods or old farm houses? Again, choose the right detector and digging equipment.

Find a dealer on this forum. Ask questions until you feel confident you know what you need to know. Remember that equipment dealers are like anyone else: Some know what they are doing and want to help you; some see you coming and sell you the stock they need to move or make the most on; some don't know how to deal with customers. DO YOUR HOMEWORK!
