Anyone know if there's any value to a coin like this or would it be another one for the attic finds bag?
Impossible to value a coin with no attribution. If found in the context of an ancient Site (and not from a kiddies play park) & it does turn out to be ancient Greek then it's Historic value is priceless. This would be one I would record on the PAS via your FLO.(with permission from the Land-owner)

Thanks for replies am still trying to clean up can quite easily see Nike flying over horse rear isn't as good but does look like bush or tree as can see one possible fruit quite pronounced but I may be seeing what I want to see I LL post better pics if poss in week or so when coin may be slightly better cheers all

russ,
From your description, I offer this coin as a possible match:
thumb00066.jpg

SICILY. Unlocated Punic mints. Circa 410-395 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 17.29 g, 12 h). Horse galloping to right; above, Nike flying right to crown the horse. Rev. Date palm with two date clusters.
Don......

Some better photos...

Hey everyone,

Below are some photos of the coin which I'm hoping are a bit better - let me know what you think. I am continuing to try and clean it up a bit, so hopefully things will get better.

Cheers,

Russ

Hi Russ, could I second Doug from NS’s request for dimensions? Weight and/or diameter would be handy.

Sure approx 17 to 18mm wide and just under 3grams weight pretty good thickness too considering

Thanks Russ, that rules out tetradrachm then. With those dimensions, if Greek, you’d be looking at a large tetrobol or (underweight) drachma I think.

Ok, I think I’ve got it.

In front of the horses back leg are three lines which I’m pretty sure are three more legs so 4 back legs = 2 horses together which matches with a biga or 2 horse chariot. There’s also an exergue under the horse(s)

I think there’s a match to this republican denarius of D. Silanus:
https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/mu...oma__victory_driving_biga/855346/Default.aspx

If I rotate the pic of the obverse side I can convince myself I see a helmeted head too but this may be wishful thinking.

Dimensions are not bad, bit light but it is well worn/corroded.

So is it a denarius with Nike on it then ? Still old? Hyundai

Yeap, if Jamie's ID is correct & it looks like a close match then we are back in the period of some of the earliest Roman coins to turn up in Britain. It's 50 odd years earlier than some of my earliest examples but a lot less interesting than the Greek one we thought it might have been.

Ha. Yep but that's ok still better than a pulltab. Make sure you don't detect around the dockleaf plants that's where I found it under a dock root about 4to5 inches with a trident 2 or tesoro vaquero good sensitive detector

So what's the nearest approximate date I could put on it roughly still BC?

Russ

Nike and Victory are the Greek and Roman equivalents of the same goddess so on a Greek coin she’d be Nike but on a denarius she’s Victory.

Looks like the moneyer on the coin I linked was in office from 92-89 BC so if it is by him then it’s from this date range.

His are the only coins I can find where the 2 horses overlap almost completely and the legs look that way but my knowledge isn’t sufficient, with the details remaining on your coin, to eliminate the possibility that there are other denarii with a matching design so it’s very much a ‘best guess’.

Thanks for that I'm just happy it's very old I probably won't find anything older it's crazy when you hold these coins if only they could tell you where they've been and what theyve seen whose hands they've been in thanks all for the wealth of knowledge that's come forward to help lately you're very kind what a good site this is i LL let you know what it cleans up like but only distilled water for now. Cheers Russell

One heck of a coin find, congrats! :notworthy:

yep seems roman but prob the oldest one i ll find but will keep on hunting thanks for the info :icon_thumleft:

more luck than anything else have had a few good finds lately in the same place had a Sestertius but very worn, the same day as my denarius also four silver coins in four visits a week before including my first hammered silver coin Elizabeth 1 (1561) date then another 2 the same! couldnt believe it plus a beautiful decorative button and a silver brooch basket of flowers,,,, all this though followed that stormy wet period not so long ago which seems better for detecting clearer signals and more depth i dont like it too warm and dry but still give it a go but certainly more luck than judgement where im concerned,,,:icon_thumright:
