Hey all!! Found a nice '42 Merc today, nothing surprising in that...BUT, what is cool is that it was 14" down. This is my deepest coin find in the 2 months I've been md'ing. Not bad depth for a 350...Nice LOUD hit too...I love finding treasure!!!

Found a dime at 9 inches but 14 is hella deep for the ace grtz keepem coming

I am quite surprised as well. I'm sure the little bit of rain we had the day before helped.

Eddie,
Nice find, and a good kudos to the Ace350.

I got two questions for ya.
I am betting you were using the stock coil as opposed to the Sniper on a hit that deep!

One other question, Was the ground wet from a previous rain shower?
I have read that if you go out when the ground is wet it helps the MD pick up a signal better.

Just looking for helpful tips on the 350
Thanks.

Yup, was using the DD coil and it did rain a little bit the day before. Rain is always welcomed for deeper hunting.

I've never even heard of a coin being pulled from that deep, let alone a dime, and with a low end detector.

You just did... Are you trying to insuate something? There is such a thing as a lucky day my friend. I was quite surprised myself. That is why I posted it. Considering that I find coins at 8"-9" on a regular basis. I am sure the rains helped with this find and luck had it's part. I could be off a bit in depth but not much. I didn't have a ruler with me but I know I was past 12 inches. Measured the depth with my Lesche tool. So, I could be off a bit.

There is a guy in my MD club that has a detector we call "The Thing". It's an old ass White's. It looks like a piece of trash, literally. It looks like a tool box with a coil attached to it. He finds stuff at 11-12" CONSTANTLY. The guys with the big $$$$ machines HATE him. He goes in behind them and finds all the silver/relics they miss.

I'll put it this way..: The blade on a Lesche is 7". The dime was almost 2 blade lengths down. Rough measuring, yes, but definitely a foot down. I found it near a bridge that was being worked on and the soil was all churned up. Very loose, easy to dig through.

It's cool, he can have his opinion. Whether or not he belives me is no real concern, haha!! It was a lucky hit, just glad I found it.

The lucky part is when your Lesche pushed it deeper in that soft churned soil it didn't scratch the heck out of it. Or when you scooped out a handful of dirt it slid off and fell into the newly deeper hole.

Being very new to md'ing, less than 2 months, it never dawned on me that it could have just fallen deeper into the hole as I was diggin. Geeze, thought I just got lucky and hit a deep coin...

Not sure if I should thank you for letting me in on that info or if should be bummed, hahaha!! Thanks man...

Nice to see someone come in with a very plausible theory instead of wise ass comments. Thanks for teaching a newbie something...

Just out of curiosity, have you found any other silver dimes and if so how deep have they been?

I have found a few Mercs, silver quarters, some silver/silver plated jewelry. I am new to md'ing and have only found a few Mercs with the limited spots I've hit. They've all been between 6-8". I thought this one was much deeper...guess not, haha!!

Well now, I don't know about the doubters. I used the Garrett Groundhog the first time around this hobby, (many many years ago), AND I still do! :)

This does have a large coil on it, 10 in. I think. BUT, I did find an Indian head cent at 15 inches once. Lot's of things combine for a hit like this. Lying flat, very low mineralization, fairly moist soil, brand new batteries, plus a VERY sensitive ear! One friend tested his machine over a find I had and he told me it didn't pick up a thing. I told him it was very, very faint. (A dime about 11 inches). He gave me his machine to try and guess what? I could hear the difference in tone between nothing and something. He couldn't. After he complained that he was going to throw his old machine away and get whatever the newest thing was at the time. I told him to try a test. I had him bury a quarter at about 15 inches and not tell me where. He did so, cleaned up the refilled hole very well. (Couldn't tell by looking) Then, I took his machine and after about 5 mins. Found the coin. He tried to hear it and he couldn't. I told him to go ahead and throw away the old machine. But, please tell me where he threw it and then, when he got his new machine, to get a new hearing aide too. LOL :)

Oh, and my deep penny? It did not get pushed deeper and it did not fall back into a scooped hole. I know this because you see, after doing this for a while you learn what the soil looks like where a coin has corroded it's way down. When I get close, I start flaking off layers until the coin shows. I then measured the depth.

Good find and glad you shared.

It can be hard to believe, but definitely possible. When ground conditions are perfect, the item placement optimal, hitting the signal at just the right angle, karma, luck, all these factors, any detector can have a good day.
I use a DFX, but started with an old Silver Eagle. If the damn thing wasn't so heavy, I'd still be using it more than I do now.
Love the DFX, don't get me wrong.
Out here in Colorado, I have people laugh and scoff at the Silver Eagle.
When I go back east to detect, someone invariably will ask if I wish to sell the Eagle to them.
My deepest coin, was my first and only Conn. Copper, dug at a planted site hunt, at an old muster field.
It wasn't planted, and, was the down the length of my fingers to elbow, over 15 inches.
Blew me away.
People tend to laugh at the Ace detectors, as I still do. Inexpensive, makes that irritating farting noise, but I've hunted next to people using them, and been shocked to see the amount of stuff they've pulled out of the ground.
Kudos on the dime!
Carl

Great find my friend. I too have an Ace 350. Cannot afford anything more. I have found larger items at 15" and even a '52 Quarter at 12". Its good to know that the capability is there if I ever come across the situation. Any silver is a good day! Keep on diggin'

I wasn't implying anything, I just said I had never heard of a coin being found at that depth. Good for you, in my area 7 inches is a deep coin. I wasn't trying to be a smartass.
