i like this piece, i kinda surface found it , while detecting the red sands of course 8)
its iron, and well the pics pretty much describe it all. the detail is not too good, it seemed very decorated. around the ring, engravings and some small studs on the side, where some of the pins/ buttons still sit. also, a few decorative small rings on the shaft thingy. soooooo, what is it guys?

Re: decorative horse deal???

You lucky, lucky, lucky person! I've always wanted to find an old Spanish bit! At least that's what it looks like to me. Scroll down about halfway on this page and tell me if you think it's a ring bit, too. There are more out there on the internet.

Congratulations!

Re: decorative horse deal??? Spanish?!

uh unless it was broken it was not the type of a item normally just "lost" in transit -- an iron bar was part of this set up--- it was known as a "bit" and was a vital item used to control ( turn ) your horse --the "bit" went in his mouth and was used to control himmaking him turn the way you wanted him to go according the pressure applied by pulling on the leather reins (left or right) attached to the bit--- the pressure "told" the horse as to which way you wanted him to go -- if the horse was going the correct way you eased off on the pressure -- if not you kept up or even increased the pressure on him until he did go the way you wanted him to go ****however if your horse was shot out from under you ---you got off him and tried to run away or maybe both the horse and the rider were shot if thats the case, there could be many items left behind there -- it could be worth checking out the area very well in my veiw. since it appears intact I do not think its a damaged thrown away "junk" item --nor is it a easily lost item either* since you can not ride your horse without it (kinda noticible if its "missing") --you might have came across a "ambush" site of the the past -- a riders horse shot by indains or outlaws or dying of thirst or disease . the type of area where you found it might assist in figgering it out what the "event" was that caused it to be there.a great find no matter what or how it came to be there. ---be on the look out for bones --horse or human * note horses were vital --a man on foot was easy pickings and often died -- thats why stealing a horse was a hanging crime in the old days . a "cowboy" without a horse was just a tramp*

Re: decorative horse deal??? Spanish?!

respectfully, the spanish were never in the northwest.

you knew it was a spanish bit.
a site was posted with similar bits.
the color of that iron shows it was laying about in the sun like a lizard for years, so it is not a reproduction.

if you examine the piece, i would not be suprised to find a makers mark.

wonderful find. i wander around in the southwest desert all day looking for items like that, and am still looking.
