i like this piece, i kinda surface found it , while detecting the red sands of course 8)
its iron, and well the pics pretty much describe it all. the detail is not too good, it seemed very decorated. around the ring, engravings and some small studs on the side, where some of the pins/ buttons still sit. also, a few decorative small rings on the shaft thingy. soooooo, what is it guys?

Why wasn't this piece put on the banner???? ??? This is an extraordinary find! I'm perplexed as to why this hasn't been placed on the banner yet?

I have nominated for banner. My guess would be that whoever is in charge is waiting for the whole story.

ok guys, i had the whole day off yesterday. and guess where i spent it :) thank god its cooling off over here because the sun was out and im in the middle of the desert. well today when i got there i marked off a 20 yard square "with my awesome red flags from lowes ;D", and worked paths 2 feet apart to be sure not to miss a beat. about ten feet from where i found the bit i was getting some faint +4 to +16 on my MXT. i ended up digging 4 small pieces, very fragile, very corroded, and black. from the looks of them, they seem to be bells. they have a high pitch ting when rattled together. if you look on the opposite from where the openings are there seems to be remains of where a hoop or something was to suspend them . this is evident on two of the four pieces. i cant further clean as they are too brittle, for fear of damaging them. i am not 100% sure of this, but it is my best guess. my detector turned up nothing else in the perimeter. however about 30 yards away from the outer edge of the perimeter , i did hit this small circle hoop.there is engraving, but the pattern does not follow the engravings on the bit. so i am not including this with this site " i did include with pictures". also about 30 yards on the opposite side of the perimeter i had a hit on a large bullet. it seems never fired, but the rear of the bullet is very badly damaged. it is larger than a .50 cal, compared to a .50 bmg. i have never dug a bullet this size in this area. i am not sure to include this with the site being so far outside the perimeter where the bit was found. "i did include with pictures" . since there does not seem to be anymore targets within the reach of my detector, i will lay this site to rest for the time being. note, there is no surface glass, iron, pottery ect in the area. i made a very funny/generic layout to give you an idea. maybe, just maybe the heavy desert rains will uncover more. ;D so as of now , the mystery of the fallen bit and "bells" remains open..................

TY for the update. Did you find any bones? I wonder if they would last that long. :icon_scratch: The one bullet is obviously modern, but I think the circle hoop and the other bullet are old. I still say banner. I would expand the search area, and as you say, search after a hard rain. Also search in the direction of the water flow. Heavy rains over the years could have moved stuff and predators move the bones.

BTW how old is the Spanish horse bit?

the desert is odd when it comes to bones.
in dry sand, if the critters didn't carry them off, there should be some.

chong...FANTASTIC, bit and bells.
some fancy don was wandering the desert and didn't make it home?

i agree with cypress, expand the search area.
anyone loosing a horse in the desert heads directly towards water if they can.

AMAZING!!!!

sorry the large modern bullet was not dug there. i used it for comparisson. i have no idea of its exact age yet. that is one reason i posted this up here;) most of the rains are gone for the year. but there will be no forgetting this place :-X
and yes i agree on the BANNER also, not being big headed at all here ;D

lets see mexican american war 1846 / 47 -- 69 caliber springfeild model 1842 * was in use by then . humm possible 3 ringer -- humm not a good time for mexicans in texas border area -- in 1845 the usa annexed texas but mexico said santa ana had no right to "barter" texas for his life thus the usa annexation of texas was in effect illegal -- since once santa ana returned to mexico the mexicans disavowed his "deal" on the spot -- there was a lot of border clashes during that time frame -- you might have stumbled upon one of em.
