Have been to this wooded site 2x before, thinking there had to be something going on there, but came up with just a few brass doodads and many shotgun shells and bullets. Today was different, started out finding a 3 Cent Silver which made me go into thorough mode. After another 1/2 hour came a large cent... then an hour later, "the mother load"... started finding 3 cent nickels and more three cent silver pieces, dimes, half dimes (maybe 1/2 reales) more large cents, half cents then this 1834 Half Dollar... i brushed it off with soap and water and its a gem. Have to admit, i felt a little guilty finding all this stuff... its like 30 lifetime finds in a few hours .... there were no Indian heads, so this was probably pre-cw or thereabouts.

Update, including Day 2: Dont judge a book by its cover... cleaned the dirt off these coins... seems to be a wider spread in dates and some post CW. 11 Large Cents, 2 Two Cent pcs., 9 Three Cent Nickels, 7 Three Cent Silvers, 4 Half Dimes, 1 Dime, 5 Canadian silvers. Why so many 3 Cent pieces?

That Capped Bust half is a beauty
But what about...."started finding 3 cent nickels and more three cent silver pieces, dimes, half dimes (maybe 1/2 reales) more large cents, half cents". When you're finding those kinds of coins, you're normally finding buttons too.
Let's see what ya got!

Stunning Half Dollar!
I don't know much about US hunting but even to me that coin mix seems odd, but if thats the picture your building, its telling you something....Keep finding those clues...

If it was a logging camp maybe the workers were paid using lots of 3 cent pieces and they were dropped on payday. Awesome recoveries, I'd hit that spot all year!!

what artifacts found that indicated logging camp? there should be tons of relevant iron around if so. Something tells me it was more than that...

That level of coinage recovered has me thinking some kind of tavern / saloon - active commerce , perhaps attendant to the logging camp activities.

You must be way North and likely East , for there to be Queen Victoria Canadian silver , and Newfoundland as well .

I see the group shot now posted. I wonder if you may be on an old picnic grove?

What an amazing spot you have discovered! Enjoy every minute hunting there. You’ll never forget the excitement. Awesome half dollar!!! Congrats

wow that's gorgeous, congrats on the half dollar amongst some other wonderful coin finds!!!

WOW what an awesome hunt!!! How do you top a hunt like this??

Great grand dad was a logger along the border, followed the railroads that were pushing west, the logging was mostly for RR ties. His pocket full of coins included Upper Canada half pennies, Newfoundland silver, British shillings, Canada fish scales, U.S. coins, shinplasters and large Dominion notes rolled up and held together with a pin. This was all from Northern Idaho, before the turn of the century. Loggers from Michigan, Minnesota, Ontario and Quebec were all present and working together. He said the Canadians were known as "Pea-Soupers". Your I.D. as a logging camp makes perfect sense to me.

What an amazing day!!
