Cru' delivers on Fireworks Night......

I promised Shaun7 the trip of a lifetime & a hammered. Delivered my promise.

Shaun7 was due to try the 2nd Fav Field again before the end of the year. It all fell though. So I swapped a box of scrap lead for a days detecting (for the 2 of us) with a Pro detectorist. He's made a living for over 25 years through metal detecting. He took us on a field which he said he had found 6000 roman coins on.

Shaun7 dug the first bronze roman coin about 30 seconds before me. I will let him tell the rest.

We detected from 0900-1630 with just a short coffee break. No food needed

Just before our coffee break I finished my gridding & headed quickly towards Shaun7 swing madly as I went. I just heard a clip of a signal. I stopped, looked down & picked up a Celtic Silver Unit of the Iceni tribe right from the surface. My third this year. ;D

Billion Antoninianus (mostly silver) Postumus AD260-65 - Colon Germany
10 Roman bronze coins
Nice Early Medieval English or French Jetton - new type :)
Fantail Roman Brooch - new type :)

I was desperately trying to get a hammered to make it a Celtic, Roman & Medieval silver trifecta. Something I have never done, & still haven't done. Not even the Pro got a hammered, so I was in good company. Anyway who can complain at a day like this!

hey crusader what is the item on the bottom of picture 2 ?

Good question.

Its the first one I have found, I have seen similar & there is some debate as to what they are.

Its a scooped shaped implement, in fact it has a smaller scoop on the other side. Clearly the main body of the handle is bust off. The Pro thought it was to do with Musket ball making. I think it more likely an implement for measuring out powder of some description. To be honest, I don't know.

could it be for casting early bag seals?

I am guessing it's bronze. The bowl, is it worn at all, what you can see anyway. Can you show us the back side. I don't think either guess is right, musket balls, no really don't think that, looks older too.

Cru,

I think you are correct - early apothecary or medicine spoon. I found a few examples of early bronze Chinese and Roman long handled spoons with a small bowl described as such. Later ones I found were often silver and had a different sized bowl at each end. Some hinged to fold for travelling.

Re: Cru' delivers on Fireworks Night......

What is a fireworks night? (did you search at night?)

Re: Cru' delivers on Fireworks Night......

Thanks Crusader and Woody, I should have known that as I learned about the apprenticeships not being able to move out of the towns in medieval times just recently. I have found a few nice jettons and a few that are very thin and did not hold up well. HH, Mike

Great finds, and good idea to trade that stuff! Both found great stuff, but who got what here, you a silver unit, but what about the rest, Shaun what goodies did you pop out of the ground? One day you will get all 3 in a row Cru.... So Cru-dad had to word did he?
Shaun will post later. This is all mine.
Dad was working which meant Shaun could use the spare Cortes. He wants one  He was also my chauffeur.
OK, understand. Yes I know that Shaun wants a Cortes, have tried to find one for him, had found one in the USA but he needed to find the cash for it first. Been looking around for another here in Europe but not found a good deal yet. Its also a bad time of the year to invest in a new MD, Xmas around the corner and such. But on the other hand there are people who need cash at this time and sell stuff...

Wow! So you got to ride in the Shaun auto again? That's really outstanding! Did he have to empty out the car and hide everything in the bushes again? I guess by now he has washed and vacuumed out the auto for guests.

yes woody the car was subjected to a full builders valet :D

Re: Cru' delivers on Fireworks Night......

mine is made of iron and is exactly as you describe it. it is dished/scooped on both sides but one side is deeper dished/scooped than the other. mine has a heavier angled piece on the narrow end. clock pendulum ?
there are clock parts near where this was found.

I just sent a bunch of artifacts to the states archaeologigst, maybe I'll include this too.

No. The title is a bit misleading. We finished at about 1630.

Celtic Again :o :o :o Iron(age)Man strikes again :D I'd give my left Kn@ker for one of those

It was a lucky strike. I had gridded for some period with the odd coin & then charged across the field, with a half ar*sed swing & hit it.

The first Celtic silver this year was from a different field but the same location. I have only visited twice & had 2 silver celtic. As I have said before, what they normally find makes my stuff look like a waste of time.

these things for years were classed as some type of spoon, there actually now classed as parts from seed drilling equipment and fairly modern . I don't know either way but i have a couple myself.

The bold was also mentioned. I have no idea, other than I thought it looked post medieval

When I go shooting across a field, I call it "trolling" as in fishing, just swinging willy-nilly in hopes of hitting a hot spot.....NGE (T)

Cru, I just don't think this is a spoon, and not a early apothecary or medicine spoon. What do you mean as early? bronze era? Its just too darn thick and with a thick staff to be a measuring spoon, what would it be measuring? A small piece of the sun? I have seen a lot of Roman and Byzantines spoons, and this does not look like any one of them, they are mostly thin. Why would someone use such a heavy thick spoon for medicine, I would also think it would be silver for such an use, the Romans had silver spoons back then too. I would think to ask a archaeologist would be the best bet. Or maybe someone will come up with an other photo that has been verified.

I don't think I ever said early. I looked at it and thought post-medieval. If your asking what I call early, then it depends on the object & therefore the squence of its development.

I have said I don't know what it is, but I'm not that bothered to take it to an Archie, as they will have no clue. The Finds Liason Officer only records items over 300 years old (roughly), so they will not be interested. To be honest, I'm not that interested myself. I may find out in a year or two, but I'm in no hurry as I don't think its ancient.

Hi Cru, no you didn't say early, but I had though you had agreed with DCMatt (who could be right, we just don't know). Interesting tidbit about the FLO only recording finds over 300 years. Why then must we report things 50 years and older? (or am I misreading it?). I had myself not thought post-medieval (I thought quite older than 300), but a photo does not tell all. Seeing something in person and studying it is the best way to determine what something is, so I respect your judgement!

Re: Cru' delivers on Fireworks Night......

Nice finds Cru - well done ;D

Re: Cru' delivers on Fireworks Night......

I have soapstone pottery shards dated between 1755 - 1764 at the site. I think definately it is colonial era.

The 50 years or over is for an export licence to take out material from this country. Very different from what they record on the Portable Antiquities Scheme. (in short different processes, same people)
