Wow! That's fascinating. My grandfather he is 94 now grew up in the swamps as well. His story's are always fascinating as well. I value every one of them. Now, Jeff. I have to tell you. I have never killed an animal. I am a 'catch and releaser'. Sorry to burst the bubble. Whatever I have caught, has gone to a beautiful, thriving preserve nearby. My mentor/trapper/ great friend, who taught and teaches me everything I need to know, is definitely one of a kind. He is 80 years old numerically, but 16 in spirit! Seriously. Born and raised in the swamp, he would just blow your mind. A day in his life, would fascinate, anyone. Luckily, I am, we are fully entertained all the time, as he is also my neighbor. Score! Fear is not in vocabulary. I value the stories of his youth, more than I can describe. Although he is a seasoned hunter and great chef, with too many recipes to count, Scott,. Why I fell into this, trapping (or 'conserving') was because of one special day, with my son, when we first moved here. We were in the backyard (get this) metal detecting. My son got this huge grin, out of nowhere, and laughed 'there's a gator behind you'! We are a family with a sense of humor, and I smiled and brushed it off. They are always trying to tease me. But, I did my head, and he was there. Mind you, he was not coming at us, but my maternal instinct reared it's brave heart, and called the trapper. Ha! The rest, though, is history. I knew, sometimes the trapper might not be there, so I had better know what to do. A few extra skills here and there never hurt, and the rest is history.
