CRISPINS CRITTERS

LOL! Sounds great except it's about an hours drive. How long are you in Maine?

Could be here another couple of weeks, depends on the weather. I don't mind driving a bit...

Stopped by and toured the Ft. Knox area yesterday and the big dang bridge... they got an observation deck in the top of it. Really cool.

I've got to do something for exercise, I've discovered Dysart's truck stop food...

That observation deck inside the bridge tower is super cool! My son won't go up again though as he doesn't like heights. The bridge is almost new. The old fort is outstanding as well! Dysarts is good and I have eaten there many times. We used to go up that direction all the time to drop plow trucks off at Whited Ford. But as we are no longer buying Sterling trucks we only go up if the little F350's are in need of major service. You should try walking the breakwater in Rockland. about a mile out into the harbor and at the end is a lighthouse. On the weekends it is usually open to the public for self guided tours.

Just got back in from 2.5 hours of yard work to find Eva sleeping in the nook of the couch doing the best 'lump' impression I have ever seen. She lifted her head just long enough to make sure I was not a government takeover and then went back to sleep. O well, she had a hard morning. The baby yanked on her tail pretty good. I think he was trying to take it away from her.

Sounds like time for some relaxation in the pool!

Minister of Music / DJ's...

I'd like to request a song dedicated to my friend Crispin for a posting on another thread.

Oh, signs, signs, everywhere there's signs. Blocking up the scenery, breaking my mind. Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign? And the sign says

Music please:

Next thing we know, it is going to be illegal to raise and shelter our own personal zombie hordes.

Zombies are NOT afraid of a Gubberment takeover. Nor are they, or I, afraid of any meaningful regulations coming from our elected representatives-

Reason depicted in the graphic illustration below, which unfortunately, ensures the ultimate survival of our governing body in the event of the EOTWAWKI.

Gary,

After our exchanges last night about foraging.....set the alarm for 6am and freshened up had breakfast and off I went a picking....managed about 12 quarts and I'd say about 10lbs or so by weight.

It ended up making just a tad less than 20- 8 ounce jars....we'll keep a few for ourselves and give most to family and friends as little gifts...natures bounty free for a bit of effort.

A few pictures for inspiration for the crew if they wish to try their hand at it.

Regards + HH

Bill

Bill,

thanks for the response that was so positive. Living in the North Country, foraging gives us something to do besides work. The recipes for the greens sound very similar to how I was taught to prepare them, and I add bacon bits to the greens...everything goes better with bacon!
Thanks, and the crab apple jelly sounds real good.....Gary

Bill, That is pretty nifty. I got some pomegranates that are ripe in the yard. Planted the tree four years ago. It is over 14 feet high and this is the first year of any meaningful fruit yield. Anybody know a good way to the juice out of the seeds? I looked up online how to get the seeds out but they are pretty tricky to actually get juice out of.

Crispin,

I'll snoop around and see what I can come up with.

Crispin,

I checked out my turkish cookbook and came up with a recipe for pomegranate syrup.

1:-10 pomegranates.

2:-cut in half and use a juice extractor similar to what you'd use for squeezing orange juice, etc.

3:-put the juice in a stainless steel pot and add 1/4 cup sugar and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice.

4:-simmer on stove for about 1 hour.

5:-If you start off with about 1 quart of juice it should reduce to about 1 cup.

6:-You'll end up with a sweet tangy very concentrated syrup.

It can be stored in the fridge and used as a salad dressing ingredient replacing vinegar or lemon juice also use as part of a sauce when cooking meat.

Nice going Bill, looks like we all spent the day stocking up. Spent most of the day out on the lake, and just finished dressing off that days meager catch, not more that 2-3 meals, but a positive day by all standards. I now have to think about another week of work, hoping to get out for some sideline jaunts each day. Last night's discussion was fun, and I too had it on my mind as I left for the Lake this am. I had hoped for a better result, but every time I get a little too confident with an end result, it doesn't happen.....Mother Nature sure has a way of humbling you, and making you realize that she is the one holding the cards, and you're just a small player.......

Great job on the jam, and I know the receipients of your gift will even appreciate it more, knowing it was homemade.......Gary
