Crab fossil found (update!!! 6-14-08)

Re: Crab fossil found

I love it! Good luck and keep us posted on the crab ball. That sounds like a recipe from Paula Deen. :D

Re: Crab fossil found (update!!! 3-2-08)

If anyone has any more ideas on how to get them out of the stone I'm ready to try!

WOW!!! :o That's fantastic, good eyes for fossil finding. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Did you find it here in Oregon?
Some neat ones @ Beverly Beach and Newport.

Never seen anything like that one, fantastic!!!!

Re: Crab fossil found (update!!! 3-2-08)

Yes these were found in Oregon. I have had better luck getting them open by putting them in the oven under the broiler for about 10 or 15 minutes then dropping them in cold water. More seem to fracture that way. I've got five so far.

This is the newest fossil found at this sight. The shell is about two inches long.

so is this location on the coast? on a beach? or in mountains? if you could, take a pic of the area, not to give your location away, but im curious on the terrain.

The area is in the mountains, elevation is about 1500 ft. I'll try to get a picture the next time I go.

I will try to post some like that found about 6 awhile backm just got thru preparing them....Nice find there, BTW.......

I actually found quite a few of these on the Washington coast. They cleared an area above a sea wall for building and in the process dug up a bunch of geodes. some had crystal formations but most had fossilized crustaceans inside. It was pretty crazy, it was an entire field of almost perfectly round rocks varying from the size of a golf ball to a bowling ball. I was young and filled the pockets of my bib overalls and took them back to camp. My cousin that took me cant remember the exact location but I remember it was near a dam.
