Must be some sort of sentimental value. An 1887 dime in not a rare date, so, has no premium value to a collector. If it's counter-stamped, that might add a bit of value too, but, in 1899 it would hardly be worth $500.
 

add to that fact $500 has allot of sentimental value today :coffee2: was allot of Money in 1899 !

a Quick google:
$500 in 1899 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $18,274.88 today, an increase of $17,774.88 over 124 years.

That's a Lot ! Of sentimental value. :laughing7:
