About 20 years ago while working part time for a moving company we where loading the trucks when I noticed a large hand drawn map hanging on the wall of a lady we were helping to move. When I asked her about it she said it was a map of a cave system on a mountain behind the house that her father had spent his life mapping. Being young I remember thinking that had to be a huge cave. She said her father never did finish mapping it before he died. Anyway years have passed and I never did hear anything else about this hill and figured if there was something there it would be front page news. Although everytime I have ever passed I would look at this hill and wonder and think something just looks different about this place. Well I was messing around with some of the new aerial imagery we have nowadays and remembered this place and thought I would have a look. Now I am really fascinated with this place. The appearance of the rocks seem very much man made. I thought it might be worth a post. Dare we wonder?

Well there are all the other thin lines of trees I was predicting... it just looks man made on the detached peak.

Nothing more than interesting stratigraphy. Of course, earlier inhabitants would have found it interesting too, especially caves and springs, and high vantage points. They didn't make it, but they may have hung out there.

What are the "stone shaped" markings in the picture? They look rectangular and held in close to the edges? Some type of building blocks? Just curious...

Well I respectfully disagree, as I don't think it is possible to determine whether those features are natural or man-made from photos. The presence of caves (and springs) would make it a good candidate for ancient Indian sites, as Monty stated, many of the Mesoamerican pyramids are actually built on top of natural caves. The "zoomed out" view looks even more intriguing, there may be outlying structures that could be investigated as well. If they prove to be wholly natural, it will be fairly easy to tell "boots on the ground".

If I had found this site, I would sure do some research and investigating. I do understand that it is necessary to respect the privacy and private property, but you can do research without setting foot there, and you may be able to get access to nearby/adjoining properties. If it is a Mound-builder site, there ought to be outlying evidences of settlement (trails, huts, arrowheads, pottery shards etc) that would either support that it is man-made, or if absent, help disprove it. The mounds were not generally "houses" for the main population after all, most people lived in huts around the mounds.

Good luck and good hunting amigo I hope you will keep us posted with your findings!

I respectfully mention my experience in geomorphology and air photo interpretation, and raise you five dollars (all I can afford). :laughing9:

It IS a interesting site, and like I said, the kind of place Native Americans spent time at. :icon_thumright:

I would say that site is worth a whole lot more research.

A line of trees or brush in a perfect rectangle would be a freak of nature and more likely man made I think. The only other straight lines of shrubery I hav seen is along creeks or near homesteads. A lot of straight line trees are planted for windbreaks in west Texas, but not rectangular. Monty

I agree...no way is it natural, the retangle resembles an enclosed encampment with a entry, similar to encampments in the UK with ditches.

This area is known for lots of artifacts. These are some that have been found within a twenty mile radius.

My Dads boyhood friends dad found that flute in a cave when he was a boy. My dad has it now. So it was found almost a century ago . How old it is and who it belonged to is anybodys guess.

If your dad took it to a museum...would he loose it?

I'd need to know if it were me, but I wouldn't want to loose it :(

Hola amigos,
I am no expert in Mound builder Indian relics, but my money goes on that flute being a Mound builder "effigy" flute. We had one, with a serpent down the length of it not too different from your own, which unfortunately was stolen so can't show it; however a little research into the Mound builder flutes might turn up an exact match.

A VERY cool find, one of those "once in a lifetime" type of finds! I am jealous!

PS - if that flute is a Mound-builder type, that makes those "pyramids" all the more likely to be man-made, and likely to have very interesting historical relics or artifacts inside as well as around.

Hello, I am new to the website. Glad I made it here! I am curious about the flute. Is it still playable?
If so, would there be a way that you could post a video of the sound of each note?
This is very interesting.. Thanks for posting this

Hola amigos,

Pretty interesting stuff - thank you for posting it! Yes there could be pyramids in Texas, which would most likely have been built by the so-called "Mound Buildershttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mound_builder_(people)" culture, which has several subdivisions (Adena, Hopewell, Mississippian etc) most of their structures were mounded earth, but they did build earth-pyramids and were active in at least part of Texas. Perhaps if they had access to stone, they built structures of stone? Here is a map of the Mississippian culture (and related) which includes part of Texas

...anyway not saying that MUST be what you have there, just one possibility; but it is possible that there are pyramids in Texas!

I hope you will keep us posted with your research into this, thank you in advance.

I live near the "Town Creek Mounds" site!!! They are some of the most amazing structures, built with outer walls of trees in Fort fashion. The Great Mound looks exactly like the Mayans Pyramids and structures in Mexico!!! but only made of Earth and Wood. I have always wondered how and why? these Cultures all around the World and in different times could build the same or similar structures?. For some reason Experts say most all are not related at all!but none have ever explained the close similarity's to Religion, Structures, carvings and so on.
