I have a question on cores.
#1. What is the difference between a core or a spall?
#2. Did they ever use cores for anything when they were done with them?
#3. Why would these 2 be so small?
#4. Seeing they are so small do you think they made and used the removed pieces for tools?
The reason I ask is cause I am on a area that I have permission to hunt and am finding a lot of cores and the one on the right is so small.
What could they of made to leave such a small core.

difference is that a spawl is what is taken from the outcropping spawled off parent stone. A core is the spawl reduced from running off flakes. As for the size they worked hard to get flint so i would say they utilized as much of it as possible.

He said it.. a core is just a supply stone. I don't think what you have in your hand are cores. I would call that cobble. A spall is just a large flake.

My small cobble has had flakes removed from all angles. Those look like broken pieces of rocks.

I'm not going there with you. You ask a question and receive an answer. If you don't like the answer just ignore it. Just asking the question shows that you don't have the experience to answer it. Call them whatever makes you happy.

Because you apparently ask a question with a preconceived notion of what the answer is. and if responses don't coincide with that notion you argue with someone who took the time to try to help you. ....am I wrong about the fact that at the beginning of this post you made.. you didn't know the difference between a spall and a core? And already your going to tell me?

Every one of those was chert. I could post dozens of colors and grades for you but It would do no good. You must be the most knowlageable person I have ever met.

SoOhio nailed it pretty good and Gator took pics and showed spalls or reduction flakes. Core is the original rock. Some even have the cortex on them. Spalls are flakes from the original body by percussion or impact.Some can be reduction flakes some can be tools. They often knapped around an item and chunked it. Because it is knapped all the way around does not make it a core. Core does not mean center of the rock like core of an apple.

Chert... You're right it is a common rock. At least where I am it is. That's why I have seen thousands Of pieces of it.

Honestly, I'm not in on the argument, just wanted to make a fast statement. Rick, the first two you posted, I would have thought they were gun flints. Maybe a shade dark for gun flints, but certainly have the appearance. Nice eye on recognizing them for whatever they may be.
