Cool (but broken) Masonic Seal Ring (ID'ed)

The title about sums it up. Did a quick hunt on a couple fields I've hit for many years and only dug maybe a dozen targets, but was all I needed to get something interesting. Seal ring is cool, just too bad it's broken. Curious if anyone can tell me something about it. The letters appear to be H H.

Re: Few Targets... But didn't need many - Cool (but broken) Masonic Seal Ring

:icon_cyclops_ani: I got it! :icon_cyclops_ani:

The initials of the first Loyalist settler in 1786 was JJ H. (born in 1735, died in 1808) The ring uses "I" for "J" II H

Not until the middle of the 17th century did this usage become universal in English books; in the King James Bible of 1611 for example, the words Jesus and judge are invariably Iesus and iudge.

This is corroborated by the authoritative Oxford English Dictionary concerning the letter J, "The J j types are not used in the Bible of 1611...."

A cool little piece of history about the owner.

"His name as Jacob H. occurred on Nov 4, 1776 in the New York Gazette & Weekly Mercury as one of the hundreds of signers to a declaration of allegiance to George III."

That is the reason he ended up here!

Congrats on the ID! I also have a few tags where the name Joseph is spelled Ioseph, they date to the early to mid 1800s. HH, Mike

That's the thing, it still leaves the age a little to question, the only thing we do know is pre 1808.

PS.. Not sure if I mentioned it above but the guy was born in Holland before he made his way to NY.

You know, being a Genealogist....I NEVER knew that...that is a great tip when researching. Even after 35+ yrs, I still learn new things about Genealogy. Thanks and congrats on finding the lost link!!!

Great job I.P. You remember my coin silver spoon I found from late 1790's that had silversmith initials on the back of I.M. Well I.M. stands for John Mcmullen so yes I was aware of the I,J usage.

Chris, where were all you guys when I was stumped that the settler's initials was JJ H so the ring didn't make sense. :D I was fairly confident after reading the use of the letter i this is the correct ID, but I especially feel good about it now as 3 people in the last 12 hours have also found items with this this type of usage. It obviously went on your years even once the letter was a choice.

Sorry I.P. I just wanted to see if you were smart enough to figure it all out by yourself............No actually this morning is the first time that I read this since you first posted and I made my first reply on it. Your initials I.P. Do they stand for John Parsons? :tongue3:

Re: Cool (but broken) Masonic Seal Ring (ID'ed)

Patch..Have you figured out the significance of the diacritic above the H ? The 2 dots may be important.
A diacritical mark can appear above or below a letter or in some other position. Its main usage is to change the phonetic value of the letter to which it is added; but it may also be used to modify the pronunciation of a whole word or syllable, like the tone marks of tonal languages, to distinguish between homographs, to make abbreviations, such as the titlo in old Slavic texts, or to change the meaning of a letter, such as denoting numerals in numeral systems like early Greek numerals.
