Cook County bans Metal Detecting

Hi everybody! Just want to update this thread. I've been digging around Chicago for over a year now. Only once did I have the police stop me. It was out front of my house at about 1am. They just asked what I was looking for. My standard answer is "anything old". They laughed and went on their way. I also have the police around me almost every time I'm out, at least driving by. I've been in parks and on beaches at 3 in the morning with the cops watching me. Never a bother. Chicago has it's problems, but any average minded police officer will be able to tell some metal detecting guy is not a threat or nuisance. Good luck out there :)

Illinois is a TOTAL craphole state. My girl lives there. She calls it Illino-no. EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING is illegal or deeply regulated. Again, it's left-wing nanny leadership. What can we do to stave it's policies off like a cancerous growth to other states? Nobody ever brings up WHY metal detecting is instantly viewed as offensive. We are doing NOTHING wrong. Again, if you're watching some sports event, drinking beer, you're part of the status quo. You're ok. But step outside those tight boundaries, and you are an enemy of the state. There aren't enough detectorists to say like 'the minority are ruining it for the majority of responsible MD'ers'. What harm are we doing? Littering? No. We actually CLEAN UP litter. Vandalism? A can of spray paint isn't part of my detecting rig. I strongly encourage anyone living in Illino-no to get the heck out of that police state. (it's the #2 'moved out' of state). Let that state crumble. You don't need them.

Diggin-chicago: Be aware that this supposed "ban", was only on county land. And only certain types of county land (a certain forest open-space preserve nonsense?). I think you're confusing when someone has said "county..." , with thinking that mean.... THE ENTIRE COUNTY. It doesn't. So private property, city lands, state lands, federal lands, and other "types" of county land, are all outside the scope of what you're reading about.

Humorously, the same notion has someone caused people alarm, when they read the state-by-state listing (the FMDAC list, for example). They see something dire, or an outright "no" for their state, and they erroneously think that means "the entire state". But no, that's only state parks. And has no bearing on city, county, private, etc.... And notice too that not all state land is state "parks" land either. So too would the same apply to the cook county thing.

Silverfinger- it could be worse, you could be living in Massachusetts!
