I was left a Garrett Ultra GTA 1000 by my grandfather therefore the expensive part is already covered so now I'm starting to think about my first purchase.? Should I go with a pinpointer?? Headphones?? I know there are 100's of posts on pinpointers and headphones and honestly they are a bit overwhelming!? I guess I need to do a lot more reading and internet sleuthing on my own.

I guess my question boils down to this, what would make my MD'ing more enjoyable, the pinpointer or the headphones?? I'm not afraid to spend the money (MD'ing is my LEAST expensive hobby!) I just need a little push in the right direction from the learned ones.?

Thanks,
Michael? ? ? ? ?

If it's an either / or I would have to say get the headphones first. You will hear those faint signals better. Background noises (e.g., traffic) won't be as much of a problem. Your batteries will last longer. Plus, you won't attract as much unwanted attention (kids love to "help" you by digging every signal).

A pinpointer is a great addition. It will help you narrow your search so you spend less time digging and more time finding.

If money is not a limiting factor get them both. You will be glad you did!

Good luck and Happy Hunting.

As far as a pinpointer goes, it is a personal preferance. At one point I was looking into getting one, but found that I had enough extra gear to tote around and once I learned my md better I didn't need one anyway! There are people who swear by them and all I am saying is it's up to you! As a first buy I would agree with Klaatu the savings in battery life alone makes this a must have! HH omnicognic 8)

I think everyone would agree to get the headphones! I think it's a MUST. Not only will it save battery life, you'll hear those faint signals! If you can afford both, I would get the pinpointer to. Makes finding your target in the dirt easier. I hunt the beach mostly and don't use the pinpointer there, as digging on the beach is a lot easier than hard ground. Just my 2 cents!

I'm hard of hearing and I say headphones. Not because of my hearing but because you can really hear the fainter tones of those keepers that would otherwise be missed. I only use my pinpointer when I have a hard time seeing the coins because of darker dirt or mud and stuff. My 2c.
