I got out yesterday and found these in a newly plowed field. The cs over a button was id,ed by cannonball guy.
We believe the CS-over-A buttons were worn by the cannoneers of a Louisiana State Militia artillery regiment called the Washington Artillery, because a good number of these extremely rare buttons have been dug in campsites known to have been occupied by the Washington Artillery. It is thought that the "A" is separated from the CS because it is intended to mean Confederate States Artillery.

That's a nice and expensive button! Congrats! Yes, the yanks took home trophies and some southerners moved north after the war.

Nice recovery with the “CSA” button, also, like that cartwheel penny too, those don’t come out of the ground too often, especially as far west as you are…

Congrats on a great Civil War button from Northern Illinois. Those items aren't found to much in these parts, but they are here. About 8 years ago, my digging partner found a CSA belt plate in a field we were hunting (also in Northern Illinois).

You don't mess around buddy. That rare button is amazing to say the least. Great info from Cannonballguy too. A real learning experience.
I vote *****BANNER***** too on the rarity of that CW button and the location where it was found.
Congrats to you Merf.

Those are some real good finds for this area. The 1806-1808 KG III penny is a rare find for this area too. I found one on an old farm site last year. You never know what you could find as older items were brought from the East by the early settlers as well as items brought back after the Civil War.

Very nice! Congrats!
