Hey Baggins, were you able to find a serial# on yours? Might go a long way towards ID'ing it.

Just took the wire brush to it, and low, and behold, I found the serial number! It appears to be 175226...Where can I go to further investigate this?

According to the site, it looks to be an 1851 Colt Navy, produced in 1864...but does not say what caliber..

1851 Navy was only made in .36 caliber. I think there were only a few models of Colt that had serial numbers that high, 1849 pocket, 1851 Navy and 1860 Army. 1860 Army is the only one of these three that was .44 caliber.

Well damn...maybe I just have another piece to a different gun then...This may be for an 1860 Army Model...

Another possibility, the Navy could have been repaired with an Army triggerguard at some point.

I believe you said these were found on a ranch? Most likely scenario is a shop where guns and other items were repaired, they may be discarded pieces of various guns.

Yes, ranch...but at a remote log cabin site...friends family is the second owner of the property since the Texas land grant.....they own approx. 1000 acres....this cabin is about a mile off the main road and there is nothing around it...
