Hello All,

Been a while since we've posted, but we did have a chance to do some back-to-back hunts this week (at last!) so we have some goodies to share with y'all. Here's a little video I made:

The first day we got out and I dug a flat button and then IMMEDIATELY Shang-o-lang dug a KILLER half real, 1782! Although I was a little jealous of such a nice coin, it felt great to strike some colonial silver before 7am!

Next thing I know, he's got more silver--this time a little piece from a silver brooch or similar item. Very thin, tiny fragment--but gives us hope for finding more of this item and being able to ID it at some point.

Then that old silver sniffer dug another silver--a Mercury Dime. This one was a 1923 (farmer drop). When I saw this coin come up, I had memories of digging them in my childhood in Virginia, back when Mercury Dimes were everywhere :D I thought it would be nice to dig one--just one--instead of a seated or spanish for a change :D

(this new Gawgag silver was not available to have its picture made, so here's just a dug photo)

Then I got an Indian Head--which was a little bit of a surprise. Crusty old thing.

IMG_0713.JPG IMG_0739e.jpg

Well, then the parade of Gawgag coins came. V nickels and Beefaloes. :D Not what we were after, but it does appear that one of the V's was modified with a leather punch :D

Then--redemption! I dug my first Mercury Dime in Louisiana. Only took 7 years of living here, and Shang had dug one last spring and another this hunt. Funny how that works--I have dug over 35 Spanish Silvers (just myself) and over 50 Seated Silvers. Heck, I've dug more Seated Half Dollars than Mercury Dimes in Louisiana. :D

At any rate, I was glad to see this in the plug-- 1917 Mercury Dime (worn slick and nasty but beautiful to me):

And MINE was not shy about having its picture taken! :D

Diggergirl (my WIFE--not my daughter lol) dug this cool prohibition era token. Here's a link to a non-dug one.

DEALERS / PRESENT THIS COIN / TO THE / H.T. COTTAM & COMPANY / NEW ORLEANS PURITAN / MALT EXTRACT / DISTRIBUTORS / AND / RECEIVE 25Β’ IN CASH / NOT GOOD AFTER / AUG. 31, 1927 (TC-364494) New Orleans, Louisiana (Orleans Parish), U.S.A.

And here's a link to a fascinating article about home brewing during prohibition--which is what these tokens were redeemed for (while "officially" sold for baking, bohemian hop flavored malt was really used to brew beer!)

Homebrewing During Prohibition

Cool find!

Then I got a couple little silver items, including a cufflink, and also this piece of colonial era engraved silver. Not sure what it is/was. Perhaps more of it will turn up in the future...

Then after my video camera had run out of battery, of course I dug my best find from the day--an 1841-O half dime

IMG_2646e.jpg IMG_0746.JPG IMG_0747.JPG

And of course Shang dug another great find that didn't end up on video either! This cuff-sized early Navy Button!
Backmark is "J. MANNS EXTRA RICH"

Sorry, no photos of the two Mummies we found. You'll have to watch the video to see those. :laughing7:

Happy Hunting,

Your usual great finds BB & Shayne. Doug stepped on that snake when we were down there-LOL. Good Spanish to help the silver count for 2016. I know this is your busiest month with all the Christmas performances & little time to hunt. WTG, Q.

It is a crazy time of year, but we are going to do our best. Ask Doug if he'd like me to mail that snake to him. He pays the postage. :D

Shang kept the turtle for a pet.

Nice stuff as always Buck. That silver piece is very nice....and interesting. Beautiful half dime and that Spanish Shane found is always a fantastic feeling. Hope to see more from you fellas while I'm freezing my ass off up here in Maine

That hunt was well worth waiting for.
Congrats on the wide variety of Super Silver coins.
What are the Temps down there?

Another great hunt you guys got in...How many colonial silver do you guys have in total??

Excellent hunt Buck. The Cane Bandits sure know how to crank it up. Early US and colonial silver - What else could one ask for.

Nice hunt

Great hunt and great result! Like the spanish silver, but the dime steals the show for me.

With that much OLD silver turning up I would imagine you are starting to get into gold coin country. A person can only dig so many Seateds before a little $1 or $2.50 coin shows up.

Hahaha, I just got around to watching the video. Excellent! Old Shang killed those mercs!

Like the picture of you holding your 2 nuts.

I have a feeling we will be swinging into high gear soon. On the trail of some new spots, and several on the list look very promising! Great to hear from you, Ahab!

Cheers,

Buck

Hello my friend! Love your signature line--which is 100% correct--Smarter not Harder!

Cheers,

Buck

I really hope so! Vast majority (95%) of the pre-CW seated coins are New Orleans mint, and NOLA mint DID make gold! So fingers crossed! Let's hope it's not like the Large Cent situation down here--we've dug hundreds of silvers and will go a whole year sometimes without a single copper! (this year is a prime example!)
