Hi all,

I found this object during a hunt in Long Island. From my experience it looks like a coin weight. Although I have been extensively searching, I could not identify it.

It is square and very little (square sides are around 1/2 inch). The size, shape and the letters and symbol on it are definitely relevant with a coin weight. (Although I might be completely wrong :laughing7:) I am sending you some pics anyway. So far, the closest thing i found is "too old" to be the right thing (coin weight for a spanish quadruple real) but i'll keep searching. I am including some pics to this email : my item (black background) and the coin weight for a quadruple real (double pic with grey background). As you can see, they are both squares, they both have the mention "XVI" actually the same letters style and on mine also appears the symbol of what could be a crown or a royal flower. However, my item has nothing on the other side. If you know anything about this, I would be glad to know.

Is that a Fleur-de-lis in the right corner?

I believe it probably is foreign & the splayed ended I indicates an early date, maybe 16th -17th C, however similar is a long way off when trying for a full ID on either a Coin or Bullion weight.

I agree - the similar weights posted in this thread are too heavy to compare with this one.

At 4.49 grams this weight is about 3 pennyweights (about 4.67 grams) using the English system under the Paris Weights system it is about 3 deniers (3.82 grams ) and 16 grains (.85 grams) = 4.67 grams)

It is close to a French Demi-Teston coin and those weights have some similarity but they never seems to use the 16 (XVI) for grains - common is XVII for 17 grains.

Paul Withers sometimes will provide input if emailed - I can't guarantee - but he can be reached through his website "contact us"

He has written important books on coin weights. I used his "Lions Ships & Angels" book to calculate the weights referenced above.
