I don't know where else to post this so here goes. I have some CWTs magazines tat I need a little help with. All the info I can find on the internet says the magazine started in the late 1950s in a newspaper style and became a magazine in 1962. But, I have about 20 issues that date to 1960-1961 and they are in magazine form. I Also read that the originals were called Civil War Times Illustrated but mine do not have Illustrated in the title.
Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

I found this site with back issues of just the cover page, this is only the magazine starting in 1962 and onwards, it seems the "Illustrated" was dropped in the last 2 issues of 2002.

Couldn't find much in the short search I did on this publication prior to 1962.

It's like they are two different publications.

I’ll bet those are interesting reads!

As far as I can establish “Civil War Times” magazine was first published in April 1959. It had a monochrome cover and was published monthly, with 12 issues per volume running from April one year to March the following year. If it was originally in newspaper format I don’t know. Although the word “Illustrated” was not part of the title, it had a strapline reading “a non-partisan illustrated magazine” and is often referred to by dealers as “Civil War Times Illustrated”. It seems to have disappeared sometime after February 1962 (that’s the last issue I could find).

At about the same time, a magazine titled “Civil War Times Illustrated” appeared with Volume I Issue No.1 published in April 1962. It was established by Robert Fowler, prompted by centennial anniversary interest in the Civil War and was also monthly, but had a colour cover. The similarity of the two masthead typefaces suggests that the two magazines were from the same stable and one replaced the other. From April 1982, the word “Illustrated” was dropped from the title and it became “Civil War Times”.

You can see typical dealer prices for both magazines at the link below and there’s an option at the top right to “sort by date”:

Check the link I posted above and you will see the word “Illustrated” was on the covers up until the last 2 issues in 2002.

It does look like it was dropped starting in 1982 but it was still there but only in small print to the right of the word "Times", later in 1996 it was returned to a larger size print.

It was dropped from the title in April 1982 but still used as a strapline:

Then, later, the prominence of the strapline was increased and then, later again, reduced.

From June 2000 to August 2002 the word "Illustrated" was larger than it ever was and very much appears to be part of the title.

I see nothing at the Wikipedia link that states that.

Banging Head.gif

The Wiki article states that the magazine was titled "Civil War Times" and was formerly titled "Civil War Times Illustrated". Wiki doesn't give a date for the change but the magazine covers themselves clearly indicate when that change took place.

There are loads of magazines whose covers include prominent words which are not part of their actual title.

Redcoat,
I have the utmost respect for you and your knowledge and ability in IDing many things posted on these forums, but.....

I'm just looking for a clear statement of that being a fact from a reputable source, I just haven't seen nor read that as a fact.

You beating your head against the wall still doesn't make it a fact, nor does Wikipedia for that matter, especially when it doesn't state what you have stated as far as 1982 being the date of the name change, also anyone can enter information on the Wikipedia site whether it being fact or fiction, so more research must be done to backup anything found on their website, IMHO.

That being said I'm going to bow out of this topic because it's not bringing any more info to to bear, so now we can both stop beating our heads against the wall!!

Here's an advertisement from The Gettysburg Times, Sept 16, 1960.
