Great find !

I found one of those a few years ago while going through some things that my wife's aunt left her when she died. We had it for a couple of years and didn't think much about it. I was curious about its age and got to looking at it one day. It's an 1862 edition and in pretty bad shape. The cover and pages appear to have quite a bit of blood on them. I found first and middle name initials and a last name written in pencil in it but the name didn't seem to mean anything to us. Of course my curiosity got the best of me and the quest to figure out anything and everything about this person was on. It turned out to be the pocket bible of my wife's 2X great uncle. He was in the 61st Va Inf. Co. "E" , Mahones Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. He was killed July 30, 1864 at the "Battle Of The Crater". In the back of the bible there is a blood stained page that reads :

"The 12th of May
Oh what a bloody day."
"In Spotsylvaina"
"ole Virginia"

( The Battle at Spottsylvania Courthouse was one of the bloodiest of the War Between The States, and particularly May 12th. For more than 20 hours Confederate and Union troops fought on that day. The total casualties were over 30,000 men either killed, wounded or missing.)

starts with an "S". Try looking at it in different kinds of light - daylight, bright inside, tilt it around and see if the pencil sheen will come out. good luck, if you find a full name I'll do some searching for you.

(BTW, if you're not familiar with it, the Battle of the Crater was one of the most fascinating events of the Civil War.)

You might have some luck if you search on the first name and middle initial in Civil War Elistment Rolls for the area where you got the Bible. You might be able to match those with the first three letters ("Sla" or "Fla") of a last name. If not, then someone one who works with and restores old documents might be able to help.
