Mariah wanted to go hunting Sunday morning despite the chilly temps and frozen ground . We literally have to pound and chop with the knife and screwdriver. Not fun.She wanted to go up behind the school forest ,which is the site of some older foundations in the pines. This was fine because I was hoping the sandy soil under the pines wouldnt be as hard to dig.
Not to be...chop chop chop...but it was worth it....We got this medal?
Have no clue what it is and it has no markings on it at all. Was about four inches down and totally encased in frozen sand...I was afraid to chop apart the sand , so just put about a five inch clod in my bag and kept digging. The SL is just in pic for size comparison. Hard digging....an hour later we dug up the dollar token, same size as half dollar ...no clue on it either ...the back is the exact as front and then a couple of minutes later we dug the little Republican pin which amazed me at the shape its in for being tin.
Then it was dig ,chop, dig chop for a worthless bunch of clad and finally after we found the little dutch pin (also no markings) we called it a day....

Nothing like a little chop, chop, dig to keep you all nice and warm. Maybe take along 2 thermoses (sp)-one for hot chocolate and one with hot water (to help thaw the hole). Great finds-don't let a little cold weather keep you down.

Wow Gypsy, you guys never cease to amaze me! I know that ground was tough going, I've chopped my way through that stuff before.

Congrats and thanks for sharing!

Sweet finds, persistence will pay off in this hobby that's for sure. I'm glad that your hard work paid off for you. Time is short around here with the freezing weather. You'll be seeing my beach finds pretty soon as I will start hunting the beach in the winter time. Thanks for the post.

I'm surprised you didn't ding that medal - chipping it out of the ground. Nice find. :)
I am suprised I didnt also.....The lure of detecting overruled the fear of dinging :)...But I saw a tiny corner of the star and then dug a bigger hole around it and lifted the entire clod out of the ground...after I let it thaw out ...thats when I saw what it was. Its really imbedded with dirt...picture looks better than what it actually is...the piece that holds the eyelet, looks like it has been soldered at one time...

This frozen ground is for the birds...any one have a beach house for rent?

Nice find gypsy, you and your daughter are a good team. When the river freezes are you going back to your bottle dump on the side hill you found last year??

Nice finds Gypsyheart....My wife would love the medal...she is of Polish decent. I found a token just like the one shown...found it 10 years ago. Some people have told me it may have been a token for a ah ah....house of ill-repute. :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ Cross my heart..no lie. I tend to believe it, but could never find another on like it. I don't visit those places ::) ::) ::) ::)

Thanks for the info....I will research that ....I have a lot of friends who are Polish and maybe they could confirm that house of ill repute business... ;) Any idea on a year that they were used? Do you still have yours? Would love to see it if you do.
I cant find one like mine anywhere.
I will research the area that we found it and see if there were Polish there....

I think you truly did deserve a medal for that token day. I don't mind chopping through frozen ground , until it gets to the point where i bend the crap out of three digging tools (bad memory) and still can't retrieve the target, that's when it's time to give up and do research until the thaw. And wouldn't you know it, I couldn't locate that same target in the Spring.

Wow Gypsy great find.

I read your post a couple days ago and didn't think much of it, until today when I was digging in a field. I got a hit and pulled out a plug. The only problem with the target, I couldn't get the target out of the plug. When I was prying, hitting the clod of dirt I finally got the coin out of the plug, I thought of your post and I said to myself I had to tell you, I know what you mean Gypsy! It was a 1923 wheat penny.

Again Thanks for your post,

HH,Ringfinder
