Got out for a quick cellar hole hunt...

Just a pull off the side of the road cellar..

Glad i scouted it as this site will require the small coil

There were bottles right on the ground and it was very trashy.. :-\

Stayed for about 15 minutes and pulled this little drum.. ;D

Not thinking anything i was not even going to post it.. :dontknow:

Then it hit me it may be Civil war related..Cellar was probably abandoned around 1880..

Put it in the what is it forum and Breezie was on top of it right away :icon_thumleft:
Its a rare Drummer's insignia or badge..

Johnny, CONGRATULATIONS on a SUPER DUPER find and a very well deserved BANNER find! Now go back, and find some more! LOL    Breezie

WOW WOW WOW!!! Awesome find and I am glad someone identified it. I've been trying to find out what mine is for the past 11 years. I will post a picture of it when I get home tonight.

All in all...my item was recovered in the summer of 2000 in Boonsboro, MD near the battles of South Mountain and Fox's gap. I've had many people tell me it looks to be Civil War or war of 1812. Nobody had ever seen one before. They also stated it may have been an insignia from a Shako hat but was not sure if it was period or not.

I will make sure to post front and back. The item is in presitine condition less the iron pin. I think it will be great for you to see it in a different condition.

Your item may be in desire of some restoration. If it is indeed rare we are part of a club not few will be a part of. I agree a CS plate would make me feel good too.

Hey JB....Finally made the banner, although a few of your others should have made it.
Congrats, and hope to detect with you soon :headbang:

Cool doesn't even begin to describe how awesome that little drum is.

grats on your banner man

That is cool beyond words !!! On a 15 minute hunt too . Thanks for posting that . I never knew such a badge even existed .
I'm glad to see you got on the banner . I'll be checking in to see what else you pull out of that site .Best of luck . :icon_thumright: :icon_thumleft:

Geez now that i am looking around for these im finding out they are extremely rare ;D

Most of the Drummers were very young boys :-\

Have a book/with pictures on them somewhere .... If memory serves , youngest was 7 . Many died of disease or in battle . One , who was 11 when he enlisted , survived the war . He had been shot 3 times during engagements .
Super find ! Congrats :hello2:
Jim

Congrats on your nice find. I can say with almost 100% certainty that is NOT any form of a Civil War regulation musician piece. THat does not mean that one may not have worn one. Early post suggest it could be passed down. TO me it looks like a hole was bored to perhaps wear as a pendant of some sort.
I belileve your piece is much earlier then 1861-1865. Could be pre-war militia but I would think earlier than that. BUt again, I don't think this should be attributed to the ACW

Another one of these was posted yesterday. Check out posting "Feb. Find's....Saturday's thrown in...." by

Thats the same one GENLEE posted after mine was identified..

Only 2 of these particular type was ever posted on tnet...

Make sure you read all the replies in a post :read2:

JB, I wasn't trying to take away the significance of the find, I was just amazed that 2 even existed. I did give yours a Banner vote. Sorry for any misunderstanding. :BangHead:

The first few months of Tnet i thought when you clicked report post..Then the finds banner link that was voting..

I did not realize you had to type in the word banner and hit report..

All those times i thought i voted banner for someone it did not... :-\

Glad i figured it out it does not give any instructions :laughing7:

Wow, sounds like we need a sticky note, or even a small change to the process of nominating for banner... I have only voted banner maybe 5 times but little did I know, I wasnt voting at all..... Crazy.

Amazing find by the way. I love it.

Chris.
