Got out for a quick cellar hole hunt...

Just a pull off the side of the road cellar..

Glad i scouted it as this site will require the small coil

There were bottles right on the ground and it was very trashy.. :-\

Stayed for about 15 minutes and pulled this little drum.. ;D

Not thinking anything i was not even going to post it.. :dontknow:

Then it hit me it may be Civil war related..Cellar was probably abandoned around 1880..

Put it in the what is it forum and Breezie was on top of it right away :icon_thumleft:
Its a rare Drummer's insignia or badge..

Nice Blaze! I found a similar drum but it isn't quite the same, I need to dig it out. Your's looks like a heavier material, mine was real thin. I think mine was a little smaller also, what does that one measure? Maybe mine was more of a commemerative piece or something different altogether. Nonetheless...killer find!

Re: Cellar hole hunt gives up a Rare Civil War find!!!

That is a Banner find !
And an Awesome find ! I would say that is a rare piece as I do not remember ever seeing one like that .

The Job of Drummer had to be a hard one to have. Having to get the troops to maneuver in battle and doing this without making a mistake in the middle of the battle , bullets flying all over and cannon shot bringing troops down and the drummer had to stand fast and not run .
That would have taken nerves of steel to do that job !

Re: Cellar hole hunt gives up a Rare Civil War find!!!

Geez now that i am looking around for these im finding out they are extremely rare ;D

Most of the Drummers were very young boys :-\

Re: Cellar hole hunt gives up a Rare Civil War find!!!

Very nice find and congrats on the banner!!

A few years back, I found one of them and turned out to be from the War of 1812 and mine is a rear drummers cap badge. It was placed on the back of their hat so the soldiers behind him knew he was a drummer. Seem to be quite rare as only a few drummers compared to all the fighting soldiers.

Re: Cellar hole hunt gives up a Rare Civil War find!!!

Congrats on an overdue BANNER recovery J.B. !!! That's a great relic. Since most of the drummers were younger men, that relic is meaningful in that we hope the young man who wore it survived the war. Now, go out and dig another great relic or coin. HH, Quindy.

Re: Cellar hole hunt gives up a Rare Civil War find!!!

Saw this yesterday. Nice banner find! What happened to the "4 Real" posting from your "buddy"? :laughing9: Seems to have been deleted. Was kind of curious as to why. Congrats on the banner! Hogge

Re: Cellar hole hunt gives up a Rare Civil War find!!!

Finally a Banner :hello2:

Now this is where this find gets interesting...

On the link i provided it was found at a Civil War Yankee camp..It appears they were worn in the
War Of 1812 also...You can find them back as far as 1802 :icon_scratch:
I am going to include a photo of a Fifer wearing one in 1828...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifer

Makes you wonder if the one found in the yankee camp was passed down from generation to generation of Drummers or Fifer's :laughing7: I have to laugh when i say that :laughing9:

Interesting find and i do know the name of the mid 19th century residents of this cellar..

Looks like the research has just begun on this one :read2:

Creskol that is sweet :icon_thumleft:

I could tell this was eating at you in the what is it forum when you asked me what it was made from..

It appears they were brass plated tin which explains the rust i guess :dontknow:
