Hi I hit a cellar hole that is just full of iron. I used my 5" coil and went very very slow. I got lucky and picked an 1864 IH out of the bottom of the hole, a super crappy signal but a nice coin. I also managed a very nice flat button and a rather interesting button with a dove carrying some branches. I believe the dove signals peace. I need to research this one. The back mark is rice and I can't quite tell what the other lettering is. Also found was a small musket ball that looks a bit chewed up. I have few "what is its" that I will post on the other forum after I clean them up a bit. Thanks for looking.

Sure it's not RICH instead of RICE? RICH is a fairly common quality backmark: RICH TREBLE GILT, RICH ORANGE, etc.

Cool finds. That IH is a nice keeper. :)

5 " coil - Sunray? How deep on a coin will that go?

Mirage
Hi this coil is an Excalibur. It's great but depth is limited. So far the deepest penny I hit was at 5". In my opinion depth is not always important when hunting iron infested areas anyway. This particular IH was only about 2-3" deep and sounded like crap. I dug it because it repeated and had a "good" tone mixed in with the crap tones. This small coil has found many treasures for me in areas that I know others have walked right out on. This cellar hole is accessible by others and has been hit for years. I found everything in this post there in one 1.5 hour hunt. Do you own a small coil for your detector?

Nice finds and that is a great IH.

The button is a civilian button called a "flat" button. I would guess it is from the 1820's to the 1850's. Check the back for writing, such as "plated" or "gilt" (Silver plated or gold plated).

My guess is if you found that button and an 1864 IH there are sure to be some Large Cents. Do not walk, RUN back!!

Thanks for the info Neil. It is nice to hear from two of our members that the buttons are early to mid 1800's. This place does indeed look older than mid 1800's and I am hoping for some LC somewhere in there. I have found two IH both fattys which is really to find. There has to me more out there. I'll be back there some more. Thanks again for your reply.

Indian Heads always make for a successful hunt. Great finds!

Nice finds! I like the button. What does the L on a IH signify by the way?

I think it is the designer for pennys struck from 1859 until 1909 James Longacre.
