ive read they supposed to have over hundred dollars in platinum in each one.some even more. anyplace pay decent for a few at a time. i have access to about 15 or 20 junk vehicles mine plus friends and relatives that i can have any part off i want. i asked 1 junk man who said they dont remove them when they crush .i can have for 5 bucks each if i cut it off.

they sell on eBay pretty well.
I sold some last summer for $25-150 depending on what they came from.
The large foreign ones bring them most. some have rhodium in them as well.
search thru this category some and you'll find more threads on converters.

They go for around 100 depending. Some one hacked off my father's converter off of his Toyota camry. It was going to cost over 1000 for OEM. The insurance had an aftermarket one put on. It's becomming a problem around here

thanx ron, yeah i bet. especially figuring it dont take too much to saw it off.probably a battery operated sawzall would be pretty quick.look for extra brackets and sheilding next. sooo. looks like this junkyard aint too savvy. if i can have all i want for 5 dollars each. bet this wont last long if i start buying quantity from them .maybe ill try to get about 50 loose at once and buy them all at that price.

also, makes u think about how much profit other yards and tow companies that know what these are worth are making. they pay 50 to 100 for a whole car and get that back on just this one part.the rest is pure profit. AND A GRAND FOR OEM IS OUTRAGEOUS

thats a big spread. 25 dont excite me 150 definately does. is that plus shipping.

the $25 ones are the generic aftermarket replacement types sold at parts stores. They have much less platinum in them. What you're after is factory original ones.

wouldnt almost all be orig.i dont know anyone who has ever replaced theirs

If you can spent $5 and turn around and get $25 for a item. I would do that all day any day of the week....Matt

I had a car that the check engine light came on and wouldn't go out. Took it to the mechanic and he tested it on a computer thingy. said both dual exhaust catalytic converters were plugged and wanted $600 each for replacements. What's that all about, was I being ripped ? Important for me to know since this is a local mechanic. :icon_scratch:

Does the engine run rough or die for no apparent reason? Or is it hard to start?
A check engine light has numerous meanings. Not guaranteed but but could an oxygen sensor. I'd get another opinion.

Next to oldest trick a muffler shop has. I went to a shop to have them replace a section of pipe. This old fart wanders over taps on my cat a couple times & tells me "Yep it's all plugged up & needs to be replaced. My cat was less than 7 mos. old! A couple months later I went back to have them re-weld the pipe on the way out of town. The same old fart ambles over gives the cat a couple taps & tells me it's completely plugged up. I told him "You just replaced it 2 months ago!" The look on his face was worth a bundle! He couldn't get away from me fast enough! The guy welding the pipe just stood there looking all befuddled. I wonder how many people get ripped off like this everyday?
