Wow ! What a way to end the day. After 9 hours at work I had an invitation to hunt with KL and his son at an old hotel. We were comparing machines to see how each would respond to targets in the ground. All three of us got a Wheaties, K's was a 1910 the coins were in amazing condition, he also scored a Merc. Shortly before time to leave he wondered where they would have watered the horses. So we headed to the stream. That is where I got lucky, knowing the machine helps and dug this Carolus IIII coin at around 5 inches. It's a bit bigger than a quarter, 2 Reale ? The date is 1800. There is good detail on the coin. Best pics I could get without natural light. Would anyone be able to tell me a good way to clean it up a bit ? I'm not use to finding old Silver, just old Copper :wink: Major Thanks Keith :thumbsup: Happy Hunting, BB

Most Silver comes out of the ground real nice. I have noticed however with this coin and a few others I have dug that Urine either from horses, cows or even dogs in the case of a merc dime I found can cause a nasty type of white/grey patina that damages the silver a bit.
Thanks to everyone for the comments and cleaning tips :thumbsup:

Nice 1800 Kieth :thumbsup:

Wish it was me... but it was Bob who found this superb find! I had the joy of hearing him shout those wonderful words "Spanish Silver!" and the joy of seeing the smile on his face! ;D

We need to go back - as it was getting dark there wasn't time to do anything else in the area other than double check the hole for a pocket spill... you can bet we will hit that area again! :icon_thumright:

Now if there is only a way to ensure that its my turn next time... :laughing7:

Sorry. I missed that ::)
