car/truck batteries

Yeah, the price of batteries is going up fast, it's nearing christmas time and with all the toys on order... china needs all the lead it can get ;D ::)

I bought a new battery at Wal-mart. They charged me a $9.00 core charge for not giving them the old one. I can return any battery i find to them with my receipt and get 9 bucks back.

TALKED WITH A MAJOR SCRAP BUYER THIS A.M. AND THEY ARE PAYING $0.25 PER POUND FOR LEAD

Before anyone goes disassembling batteries thinking they will get more from the lead in them without the plastic case, I must warn you of a few things.

#1 sulphuric acid in them is corrosive, and lead / lead compounds might be problematic as well.

#2 fumes can be deadly.

#3 it is not all lead in them, there is also lead oxide, which most scrap yards won't take, and the plates are actually made of a steel grating like structure with the lead bonded on. not pure lead. Some scrap yards *might*buy battery pieces, and in fact years ago they used to buy batteries by the pound but most of the time they won't.

Seriously it's not worth it to tear them apart to sell them, between trying to dispose of the acid properly. (down the drain will get you 10 years in prison because of the lead compounds etc etc).. and the protective gear and having to wash them off to sell... just sell them as is, and let the refiners do all that dirty work.

Yes Ascholten is without a doubt correct.I was trying to point out that the case it's self also has value but not if it is destroyed or breached in an amateurish fashion. Batteries can harm or kill and can be explosive if any remaining charge is shorted out.The heat can ignite the volatile gases. Thank you sir for catching that.

Good points. I say sell 'em as is.

Was this for pure lead?Or for whole batteries?

The spot price of lead is almost $1.70 and climbing, junk battery prices I have found online are for over $.30/pound for whole batteries!Do you know what a car battery weighs?!

But who pays the shipping to get the 'online' places? Oh don't forget the 12 dollar hazmat fee too since they are probably wet cells. I don't even think you can ship them us postal, ups or anything like that, I think they have to be freight... get a BIG crowbar to pry open your wallet for that fee.

I have an 'in' with battery companies, and exide, ascent etc are paying about 6 bucks or so per car battery. standard size, more for bigger, less for smaller etc... If you got a pallet full you can get about 8.

I am in Northern Calif. in Bay area.

Does anyone know who pays cash for car batteries???

I know that Kragne Auto Parts had an ad that they would give a $3 gift card for each battery.

Thanks

gold needle, you obviously have a computer, and access to a phone book.

Look around your place for recyclers, junkyards, used battery sales, etc.

Pretty much any junk yard will buy them for recycling. The thing is finding the one who is paying the most and is not 100 miles away.

Do a google search or something on recycle batteries san francisco bay, used batteries bay area.. etc.. mingle words, you get the idea..

you should find plenty to start looking into, the yellow pages is another great place to start searching as well.

Thanks Aaron

I did try internet seaches prior to posting. Looks like I will have to try various word combinations.

I will call junkyards direct and see what they are offering, that is if they currently are buying.

Ad in paper today, in my area:

"We buy junk batteries Auto/Truck,
$7 each.

all have a good un.......

Ahh, can we take old battery to the scrap metal center for money? In Kansas, when you purchase a new battery for replace, then they give you five dollars off for trade in with old battery at any stores.

I have 35-40 batteries myself and a few converters to sell. The best price I have found for batts here is $3.50 or 10 cents a pound.
