Its hard to read. Can you tell us what it says?

On the front its a lady and it says HER MAJESY'S BANK OF LIRA 1 QUEEN'N OUNCE. On the back it says PROGRESSIO SIENTIA DEVOTIO with a shield on it with pics in each corner on the shield.

"Devotio"..........
Perhaps a religious token or medallion?

Best,
Scott

Not much to add except I believe "Devotio Progressio Scientia" is Latin for something like "Devotion to the progress of science/knowledge." Perhaps some type of award? :icon_scratch:

Unusual, for sure. Not dated (very unusual for a coin). Both Turkey and Italy use a Lira, but that's a denomination and not a location. Lira is a city in Uganda; but they use the shilling or cent. The obverse is in English and the reverse in Latin.

I got nuttin. I'm thinking a token of some kind. The Latin sounds like a school motto.

Wait a minute - can we see an image of both coins flipped over?

Charlie noticed it.

Do you have 2 identical coins? If not, can we see the backs. One looks slightly larger than the other. :icon_scratch: What size, how thick and what type of metal?

Its 2 coins and they are identical. I showed one from the front and one from the back at once. They were in the woods of Georgetown Ma. 3ft apart and about 6in deep. They came up clean so I dont think they are copper. Slightly bigger than a quarter and about as thick. Its been a huge mystery! No coinstore, expert, or forum has been able to id these. I cant believe with how easy it is to find info on almost anything with just a few key words that the internet can find and I get nothing. They didnt just fall from the sky. Ater months of research Ive been told to give this forum a try. By the way Hello everyone. This looks like a great forum! Glad to be here!

Have you tried to identify the 4 items in the shield?

What is the top left octagon? I cant make out whats under the triangle either. All I can make out is the insect in the upper right. The lower right may depict an ink bottle amongst some other items.

The top left looks like a pick ax with a stop sign over it, and on the bottom it looks like a well maybe with a pointed roof over it???? Weird! Yeah I see a bug or a moth too! Strange coin. They must be the 2 ever made! LOL!

Stop mining? stop mining.jpg

No bugs? no bugs.jpg

From my experience here this can be solved but you need to keep the conversation and interest going. Bump it back up every now and then to the top of the list. Keep the thread alive. I had a thread that was buried and solved 5 years later, it happens, but its best to keep the topic hot near the top..

That shape is a hexagon and a stop sign is an octagon.

Good idea - I'd like to know the weight too :icon_thumleft:

eta - a hexagon is the honeycomb symbol - so maybe that is a bee?

What is the connection of a bee with a rifle to progress and the devotion to science?
