Holy Smoke!!! Well done!! Unless the Cannon Ball Guy says different. But my friend, I think that is exactly what you've got.

By the way, be careful posting pictures from the actual site where you found the object. There's data stored in some digital pictures which may reveal gps coordinates. Just a heads up.

Good advice...I keep my GPS locator off when taking pics!

I'm glad you cut it off, but in the future I still wouldn't. If folks can hack big banks, they can find ways around simple on off switches on smart phones or digital cameras!
Anyway, are there any markings on it? I hope you send pictures of it when you clean it! I also hope CannonBall Guy chimes in on this.

It does look like a trunion strap. Could also be a bearing block for a shaft. Makes me wonder, what happen to the cannon? Tony

There are still many cannons in this area but I imagine that "back in the day" the carriages were more disposable. This was found below a period wharf so it could have been tossed after being damaged or worn...though I suspect they would have at least kept the hardware...who knows...

Very nice find! What would the rough date range be on that?

That's a problem with this site...a long military history. Early 1600s right up to late Victorian. I've found all manner of relics in this immediate area over that entire span...

While I hope it is a trunnion strap, and it probably is, I wanted to ask if there were any old bridges in the area? I have seen bridge bearings that have straps similar to that.

Looks machine made to me, so, not terribly old. Could be trunnion cap, or, maybe an axle bearing cap.

Thickness of the metal looks too thick for the inner diameter to be a trunion cap, likely from some sort of machinery.
