It seems t be made to seal something up... I guess the vent hole will help answer this

While it probably isn't, it looks like a lemon juicer. Whats its size?

Could be the bottom of something like an outdoor light witch would make that a weep hole to let out any moisture.

Should've done that huh. ;)

Maybe these will help. Unfortunately, not everyone has the tools to precisely measure every conceivable shape. This is as close as I can get.

Thanks for your help!

Merry Christmas!

What type of material is this object made of?

Looks like Bakelite/plastic maybe?

Though it appears to be a little small, it reminds of a top to a tea or coffee carafe.

No, I generally wouldn't post anything not made of metal, but I understand you have no way to know that about me. :)

It's not magnetic, and to me, it appears to be brass.

Hope that helps.

Thanks and Merry Christmas!

My first thought was a ash tray, but with the vent hole I think it is a top to a tea or coffee carafe. Nice find though.

Maybe somewhere nearby is the rest of it? That might solve the mystery.

It does look like it was made to fit into something. I'll be looking for more next time there.

Thanks for the help!

Lemon juicer was also my first thought -- quickly discarded but it does look like one. The outdoor light thing has possibilities too -- that hole could be for a pull chain. I vote for the top of a teapot though. It looks like one and the hole could be for escaping steam. The lip might be for catching spilled water when the pot is overfilled and steam starts bubbling, rather than jetting out. Whatever it is, its rather attractive.

My first thought was maybe a chicken water'er, but the vent-hole would not be necessary and It's a bit small. Bird cage feeder?

1. does the "vent hole" go all the way through?

2. is there any place where it looks like another piece of metal was braised or soldered onto this one? (look closely, please)

3. can you tell us the age of other items found at the site where this piece was dug?

Thanks,

Buckles

If that thing was dried up "hard rubber", I would say It's a flusher-stopper for a commode, looks identical. Need to find out what the material is.

Paleopilot, the finder already gave us the answer to to the question you're asking, in reply #8 (above in this discussion). He said "It's not magnetic, and to me, it appears to be brass."

Judging by it's small size, the shape, and the hole, I would say it is the top to a vintage incense burner.

The one pictured below is not shaped quite like yours, but I posted this pic to show that some incense burners only had 1 or 2 holes in the top. I think most of us are use to seeing the ones from the 60s/70s that were brass, made in India, and had several diamond shaped holes in the top.

Neat find :) Breezie

Yeah, I caught that Cannonball, it appears to be brass, might need to scratch off some patina and see what it is. Got me wondering? Also, judging by the thickness of the material, a piece of brass that size would be relatively heavy. How much does it weigh?

It seems kind of "beefy" to be an incense burner, but who knows. Also what purpose would that deep lip serve? It looks like it is meant to contain spills of some kind.

Edited to remove photo.
