Metal Detecting
After each of my detecting outings I throw my clad into a plastic bin that I have on my work bench. It's been about 19 months, but it finally filled up and it is time to take it to the bank. Fortunately, the credit union I am a member of has a coin counting machine that we can use for free. (Basically it's a Coinstar with no fees).

I was looking at the pile of clad and trying to guess how much it would total. That's when I thought that it would be kind of fun and interesting to see how close someone could come to guessing how much is there.

So, here is a contest. Take a look at the pictures below of the pile of clad. Come up with your best guess as to how much it will total, and respond to this thread with your answer. Please, only one guess per person. I will take all guesses that are given before Tuesday, 10-07-14 at 11:59 pm, PST. Whoever comes closest to the actual total amount will get a little prize. I'll send the winner a few older coins, including a 1914s Barber dime, a 1901 Liberty head "V" nickel, and an 1898 Indian head penny. Nothing of significant value, but this is just for fun anyway.

I know in the pile there are a few dollar coins. Otherwise it's quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies including zincs.

And here is what I'll send the winner.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this. I figured a few people would submit a guess, but I didn't think that nearly a hundred folks would join in.

And now for the answer. The total amount in the pile of clad was $406.36.

Congratulations to lynjess50 who was the closest with a guess of $400.00. (I sent you a p.m. for your address.)

Here is the breakdown of what was in the pile:

6 dollar coins = $6.00
763 quarters = $190.75
1477 dimes = $147.70
397 nickels = $19.85
4206 pennies = $42.06

I was surprised at the amount it ended up totaling. Not that I didn't believe the bank, but I keep a log of all my outings and what I find. It took an hour, but I went back through them and added up all the hunts. The dollar amount I had written in my log was about a dollar off from what it ultimately totaled, so the count is accurate.

What shocked me though was the sheer number of coins. I can't comprehend how there were 6849 coins in that pile. I really have nothing to compare it to, in terms of quantity or volume, but I would have thought that many coins would have resulted in a bigger pile.

We'll it's been fun. Again, thanks to everyone for playing.

Thanks for the contest. Amazing how much people drop. Yesterday I found a nickel spill. That alone totaled 98 nickels.

Congrats to the winner and of course kudos to the OP for finding 400 bucks worth of clad! :goldtrophy:
