I think you're going to find that this is a bunch of good luck symbols in many different languages. In the photo I see a turtle , a pyramid , an Ankh, Pisces, infinity, a maltese cross, etc.

That is not a turtle. I have seen that form before... many times. It is a squirrel smacked by an automobile. (the tail has been photoshopped to fit in the allotted space) TTC

I shared the picture with two groups of friends that I have. One group is filled with tv/movie sci-fi/fantasy fans, the other is filled with tabletop rpg'ers (not that the two are mutually exclusive).

I'll let you know if anyone has anything constructive to say...

I'm guessing fantasy piece.

The outside symbols mimic alchemy.

The inside are 'runic' like.

He has since given the ring away but he believes it said just "Sterling" on the inside.

Amazingly, I figured this one out on my own, completely by chance. My wife and I were an an antique shop today and I happened to see a token with weird characters on it and though "hey, that looks familiar!" None of those characters matched this ring, but that searching led me to this:

The outer ring seems to be mostly masonic symbols.

Well yes, what does it matter? He gave it to a friend. He knows where it is he just doesn't have it anymore. It's just something he tried to figure out for years and and I figured it wouldn't hurt to try again.

Not so far. Find an expert in these languages and show the picture to this person. Either the expert will be able to decipher the ring, or the expert will tell you it's a fantasy place. Now you know what kind of expert to find. I'm guessing either a college professor, or an auction house with a specialist in this field.
