... and a good chance is all i need to consider it my first cw relic in my book
I guess you are saying that nothing CW era or older was found yet at this site?
no, they were (I think almost everything I've found there were from that era or before unless it was on the surface :tongue3:), i just havn't found anything having to do with the war its self

:icon_scratch:Where is that stuff? The shotgun shell isnt, and its really hard to sat that grommet is
the shotgun shell is pretty close, and I believe the grommet is too, the linnen cloth remnants in it are most likly from an old flag or something, but definatly not matterial from tarp, also why one part of the grommet it dented in, from the rope holding the flag up...?
Also remember that I've hunted this place MANY more times than just this once

The shotgun shell has already been IDed and it is not CW era. I think what we are tring to say if you are finding older items in the area, it would help to place the lead in the same era.

Exactly, your shotgun shell is about 20 years off,and puts it in a period that thy were starting to use lead for pipes

i am finding older items, older than CW, most of which are farming and horse relics, I've had them ID'd by the wife of the owner of the tavern, she worked at a stable for the majority of her life and is an expert with the stuff

I think it's lead for forming bullets or balls. That type of lead had to be small so the soldiers could carry it around with a small melting pot. Plumbers lead would be bigger and it would be melted in a much larger pot therefore it could be larger bars. Just a thought. Monty

Heres something more your shape but yours is much cruder. Also a thread to read. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php?topic=261147.0

All the ingot bars of lead that I have seen from the Civil War and back to the 1700's was in the shape of a elongated rectagular bar, being flared out at the bottom & with writing imprinted on the top such as 'LEAD' or some military dept. writing on it. They are usually about 1/2" wide to 1" wide and maybe 6 to 12" long. These bars were the way they were always transported (in barrels or crates), although I wouldn't be surprised to find out there were other forms of lead ingots it made for transport

A quick search revealed a lead bar claimed to be from the CW. I would imagine they used whatever was available. http://www.joshuasattic.com/search/product.asp?ID=2439

Yes,those are the bars, and they pre date the C.W.

The pieces were cut or carved off of that bar, they did not come that way(like yours)yours clearly shows evidence of being cut or broke off of the bar.

:hello:

We find lead here all the time...every hunt :-\ it comes in all forms and sizes, the use could be for anything, your piece does'nt seem to have much oxidiation to it :icon_scratch: it could be CW related or even from early settlement :icon_thumleft:
