It could be 1/3 or 1/4 of a lead bar... the type used for casting ball. Could also be plumber's lead. :dontknow:
musket ball? and it was 6+ inches down at a 1700's site, doubtful about pulmber's lead :tongue3:

I agree it could be lead for casting ball but wasnt the grommet and 12 gauge shotgun shell found on the same site? "Three things worth keeping, all found 6+ inches deep, each of which i have questions on:"

yes, and the shotgun shell is from the 1800's and the grommet i think is from an old flag, no way the material inside the grommet is from tarp, it is like thick cloth. plus 6+ is what my md said, i didnt acctualy measure, im not positive about the acctual depth of the three, but i know the lead was deeper than both

I think the shotgun shell is 1890. The thick cloth in the grommet could be canvas tarp. If the ground was turned for construction, I dont know if a slight difference in depth would tell us anything. I dont know how to tell the difference between plumbers lead and musket lead. :dontknow: Manufactured plumbers lead had markings on it so I think its a good chance to be musket lead... but not by comparison dating to the other 2 objects found or depth.. :)

ok, i understand what you mean now, also, the back area of the site, has never been touched by construction, per owners orders, the only constuction was in the front yard because the ground was unstable because of a tunnel thats was part of the underground railroad

Could have been a standing weight at one time or maybe that's how they sold lead in bar form. Looks to have a sheer mark on one of the pics where a small amount of lead was removed. I have found pieces about the same size and shape as the one you have found. Arty

This may be a looooong shot, but it could be the beginnings of a field made lead 'stamping die' that held letters for marking equipment and clothing. I have one similiar except mine has a treaded top, and there are some letter impressions. I posted in on TNet over 6 months ago, and it was ID as a Civil War stamping die by VaYank (I think) I will try to find the link, but in the meantime, here are a few pics. Interesting finds, Breezie

Since we dont know for sure, Breezie made a suggestion to take a look at lead stamps. ;D

It was carved off of a longer bar,as often was to cast many things, musket balls included.....but lead was used for MANY things,as mentioned for "soldering",pipes up into the 20th century. Its anybody's guess what it was specifically for?
