The Discovery of Gold in California, swelled the population of San Fransisco. A coin shortage caused jewelry makers to make gold coins. Known as California Fractional's Starting around 1852 till 1882 these little jewels were made. Most were made with Lady Liberty and American Indian portraits.
They were made in 3 different denominations, 25c, 50c and $1. Made in 2 different shapes, Round & Octagonal The coins were made with different amounts of gold and purities. The earlier coins had more gold content. They were used in commerce, as SF Mint could not produce enough to satisfy demand.
There were also a lot of fakes made later, and ones called tokens. A system was developed to assign #s to the real examples. It is known as BG#s.
The coins I'm displaying, are a type set. Round & Octagonal Lib's and Indians.
