I’ve had this site on my mind for several years now due to how badly I’ve wanted to detect here. Well on Thursday I decided to stop for another look-see and noticed the property manager walking the site, so I got out of my truck and approached him. I explained to him about my passion for local history and the hobby of metal detecting.

I asked if it would be alright if I detected here and he said, “he didn’t have an issue with me detecting the property” … yes!!! So, I got right to work and for the next 2hrs I dug 2 – LC’s and a silver quarter. I decided that I needed to take advantage of the balmy 3c November weather here in Ontario and returned for another 6hrs yesterday.

One of my favourite finds was the ink bottle poking out of the dirt under a cedar fence bordering the site. Some of the other finds were two silver dimes and a quarter, five Large cents and a ‘36 Penny. I also found a child’s sterling silver ‘Good Luck’ ring, a gold plated hefty brass man’s ring, a ‘Toronto 1921’ pin back, ten US ‘Wheat’ Pennies and 20+ pre-1952 King George Pennies.

I’m planning on heading back again on Sunday morning, that is if we don’t get too much snow overnight! :laughing7:

Thanks for looking,
Dave

Nice stuff to find, looks like a large area, I very much hope that you will be able to return there often, you just know there's more. It's soooooooo hard for me to approach people like that with a request to detect, but sometimes it works out really well. Again, nice hunt there.

Very nice haul of the goods! I always view asking permissions as if it's a no I'm still in the same position and if yes it's a bonus.

Nice relics. Good luck on finding more. :icon_thumright:

Awesome hunt and I’m sure there are more goodies to be found there.

Those are some really nice finds! Think you probably have a good productive old spot to hunt there.

Nice going on the permission Dave! Nothing like getting a site that produces lots of keepers as well. Best of luck getting back to it today and hopefully you'll get another mitt full of coppers and silvers from this untapped school property. Which is pretty rare today I might add, having first dibs on the site after folks have been around for 50yrs detecting.

Nice post! Great research and great finds! Well done, congrats and HH

Great finds on the new permission, congratulations! :occasion14:

I like how those Canadian coppers clean up! And way to take advantage of an opportunity, I'm allergic to door-knocking and prefer to catch people outside, at least that way i know I'm not interrupting dinner, bath-time or anything else. My last permission I've been eyeing came about when I caught the lady of the house out sweeping rocks out of the road (first red flag)...i pulled over and talked to her (25 minutes, 2nd red flag)...but anyway I (finally) got carte blanche to detect anytime. Turns out she's a widow and after detecting I knocked to thank her and she filled me in on all the neighbors, how her late husband passed, etc...but I would have stood there and listened to her for hours. If she was willing to talk to me I'm willing to listen, seems like that's all that some older folk want. One thing that attracted me to the old house on her property was the old, hand-operated water pump in the front yard and she did tell me that she's been asking her siblings, nephews etc..to remove the pump and fabricate it into a mailbox stand, which would be really neat, so I've been tossing the idea around to do it for her. Anyway Antiquarian, congrats on your new permission and your excellent finds. Ddf

Nice post. Excellent variety of finds too.

I hope that the weather holds out for you. Good luck.

Very nice finds and a very promising new permission. Congratulations! Is that a ''dot'' 1936 cent? :laughing7:

You KILLED the school house mate! WOO HOO! Great timing on scoring the permission and pouncing right on it to gather up some excellent booty. Keep pounding it as long as you can.:headbang:

Thanks very much for your post and for sharing your thoughts sprailroad.
The only advice I can offer you when approaching a property owner is to be honest, genuine, polite and neatly dressed.

Best of luck to you,
Dave

This is exactly the position I take.. nothing ventured, nothing gained! :laughing7:

Congrats on a nice assortment of finds

Thanks Art, this is always one of the benefits when detecting schools... you never know what can pop up.

Thanks for your post Relicific. :occasion14:
I returned again yesterday and will post those finds later today.
Dave

As I mentioned in my initial post, I've wanted to detect this site for years now, so I'm not planning on leaving until I've saved all of the history here!

Best of luck to you Tired Rooster,
Dave

Thanks very much Jim! :hello:
I've taken great pains to slow down my "Flapping Chicken" style of detecting and have adopted a more methodical detecting pattern.
This site isn't going to be developed anytime soon, so I'm not in any hurry to recover what's been lost here over the past 153 years.

Besides, I've had a great teacher... right buddy! :laughing7:

Good Day for sure Dave . ;)
Thanks dawg, hope you're having a great year my friend! :occasion14:

Thank you for your kind words of support Diggin Dude!

Thanks for your post dirtdigginfool and for your heartwarming story about your permission success! :hello:
You never know, if you don't ask right.

I was back at this site yesterday when a small compact care pulled up with two ladies inside, they asked me what I was doing here?
After I explained my passion for saving local history so it doesn't get lost to development, they proceeded to tell me about the neighbours in the area.
They gave me the name of a gentleman down the road that would likely let me detect his place and about a property next door where a house had once stood that I didn't know about.

So, just by my being friendly and chatting to strangers like you did I now potentially have two more leads!

Best of luck to you,
Dave

Thanks very much Tom, I hope the weather holds too! :laughing7:

Take care buddy,
Dave

Thanks for your post Anton!
Unfortunately it's not a '36 'Dot', if it was I'd be detecting on a beach somewhere in the Caribbean right now!
Dave

Well done. I love old Canadian coins. Thank you for sharing!

What's funny is that I love finding US coins, especially Mercs, Barbers & Walkers! :laughing7:

Thanks for your post and for your words of support Kevin! :occasion14:
I've been back twice since I first detected this site earlier this week, I'll make another post later this morning.

Great job jumping on an opportunity when it presented itself buddy. One thing I’ve learned is that things rarely offer themselves up for us. If a river is lower than it’s been in 100 years you best detect it. If some dirt is moved on an old site you best hunt it. If you see a property owner out and about that’s your chance. These chance opportunities are usually much more natural and successful than what seems like a great plan of attack. Lots of great targets pal. Hope to see lots mire

Dave
Now that`s the way to get a new permission way to go !
So many nice finds and Silver...place seems to be loaded and a very nice looking old school .
