This post was revived when IronPatch found a match for the back of the LION button. I welcome any thoughts or ideas on this lion button. Thanks, Breezie

Original Post:
Hey folks, Attached are 5 pics of some buttons I dug in a yard where I have found CW items as well as a 16th century buckle. I have close ups of the first 3. The lion button is most unusual. Button #2 seems to have a circle with lines running through it. Button #3 is made out of some type of metal, which could be lead, I'm not sure. Any help with any or all would certainly be appreciated. Happy Friday! Breezie

The back of that button stuck in my mind and just for the sake of interest here is a good CW one that's similar.

IronPatch, great detective work! I do believe we have a match for the back of this button. I'm going to clean it tonight to see if I can get some letters/script from the back. Below is a side by side comparison of the two. Now we've got to figure out the who/what/where of it. BTW, did you note the price of that button. Thanks, Breezie

Oh, goodie . .maybe we can finally figure out about the strange symbol on button #2. BTW, I did a little more cleaning, and looked at the back of the lion button, and the only thing I can see is the symbol pictured below. Thanks, Breezie

This thread is 30 days old. Do you remember if it was in Todays Finds or What Is It?

After viewing IPs link it has the look of a C Rouyer 19th century button. Heres a Carolina button with a similar lion but on the back.. Just some ideas to throw out there.

http://74.125.47.132/search?q=cache...+Orleans+lion+button&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

I originally thought it resembled the old Persian lion, now called Iran, but it lacks a sword.

Between the matching C Rouyer lion, button type, and found in Carolina, it seems to have the southern made C. Rouyer connection. Watch you think Breezie?

BCH, WOW! You are the bomb! :headbang: I think I can see a light at the end of the tunnel now. When I read your post about Iran, I looked at my button and realized the lion didn't have a sword. The C Rouyer lion is a good connection since they made 'Southern' buttons. Hopefully we will be able to find my particular button. I wish I didn't have to work today so I could search. Thanks again, Breezie

I forgot to ask: Should I try to clean it for a better photo, or just leave it as is?

You would have to ask someone else about the cleaning. Buckleboy has a great tutorial somewhere and someone recently cleaned their button carefully with Diet Coke and it worked great. Must be diet, no sugar.

Good eye finding that lion BCH! I might not be reading this right but I didn't think the Rouyer button had the lion.

http://relicman.com/buttons/zBackmarkExtraGold.htm

Backmark: " (graphic of lion head) / EXTRA GOLD (script) QUALy. (sic) ", likely Smith Kemp Wright 1862 to 1865, but not proven
Tice not listed in backmark book that I can find, it is listed SC section in his button book.

Breezie - I also stumbled across this button - does this look like your symbol?

Breezie,

Not sure if it's been identified, but I believe #6 is the weight to a CW poncho.

Sort of.. I guess. I don't know what the livery button symbol means but maybe it could be a clue to your backmark.

Never mind--I think I was off on the poncho grommet call. Could be a coat hem weight as shown on p. 53 of Crouch's book? Yours looks a bit more intricate, though...

Bramblefind is right. Rouyer made buttons do not have a loin on the back

The Rouyer button back is the one Iron Patch posted. I googled it and saw the lion on a Carolina button and somehow misread it. My bad.

It is however a similar lion so maybe a clue.

Old post but heres another Czech Railway trolley button. It resembles your unkown Breezie. I think WWII era electric trolley is the avenue to search.

An unusual glass uniform button. Thought to be Czech Railway (trolley system) c. 1940's made when metals were scarce.
