This post was revived when IronPatch found a match for the back of the LION button. I welcome any thoughts or ideas on this lion button. Thanks, Breezie

Original Post:
Hey folks, Attached are 5 pics of some buttons I dug in a yard where I have found CW items as well as a 16th century buckle. I have close ups of the first 3. The lion button is most unusual. Button #2 seems to have a circle with lines running through it. Button #3 is made out of some type of metal, which could be lead, I'm not sure. Any help with any or all would certainly be appreciated. Happy Friday! Breezie

Breezie, that is one mighty fine button! Can you show the shank on the back so we can guess the age?

Breezie, it is a lot newer than it looked from the front. It seems to be a civilian button of probably late 1800's (my guess)

And neither did I, which is why it is a strange button to me. The letters on the back are in a very old looking font, making them look almost like symbols instead of letters. I'll try to clean the back some more, and post another pic. Thanks again, Breezie

I drew the symbol as best as I could see. Hopefully this will help someone, it didn't help me! Breezie

So Crusader, you do feel like it is a livery button even though it has a 'funky' back? Did the symbol on the back mean anything to you? What do you think about button #2? Thanks, Breezie

I see the back is iron but does button #2 have 2 different metals on the front? Is the center with the logo metal or something else?

BCH, Yes, there are 2 different 'materials' on the front. One is metal (I'm assuming brass) and the black area is NOT metal, but some type of hard substance like petrified leather or rubber. The symbol in the middle is strange too. Breezie

My guess is either hard rubber or bakelite. That may help date it. Im thinking radio or electric or a transportation related logo.

yeah now that bigcypresshunter mentioned it and looking at the second button again it does look more like bakelite than hard rubber or pressed leather. Sorry Breezie, still no idea on the lion button

The black area in the center of button #2 appears to be glass. Whenever I hold it sideways to the light, it reflects a deep purple. Breezie

I saw the purple tint in one of the chips and that's why I thought it might be bakelite plus it looks to have a lot of small holes or pits and I know bakelite deteriorates when it is stored with plastics. Hmm might be glass. I don't know about sticking a pin in it but Breezie my friend we are running out of options on the material this button could be made of.
