Buttons, a Bayonet & 15 crusty coppers!

As we try to do, we dug plenty, but "I" didn't get over anything too great. The bayonet isn't quite all there but it's a first so is cool. I always like a early seals, they popped up out of nowhere, did not expect them where we were as almost everything was 1800s. Too bad the coins are brutal condition but it was fun finding them. The 1813 Trade & Navigation will be very nice once cleaned. The second last coin is a Sheffield Penny Token. The last I'm guessing an early 1800s Reis but I haven't tried to match it yet. Others are a George III Hibernia, 1830 Halfpenny token, another Trade & Navigation, George II Farthing, Halifax Halfpenny, 1812 Halfpenny, stamped Halfpenny (I) ... and a few more all not worth showing closer.

Next hunt is early next week, hope the weather hangs on!

Think I had one toasty Tiffin!

I don't count coppers anymore because our numbers pale in comparison to what we used to dig. (between 250-300 on a good year, that's all large no matter what they were)

One of those Rare Tiffins, eh? :D

Well, normal years in KY I would be thrilled to find 5 coppers in a year. Last year I got 8, and this year my goal is 20. I don't know of any other KY hunters that find 20 coppers in a year.

I was hoping for a good relic today, but didn't quite find the spot I was hunting for. Stumbled on a little something else though.

It's just different here, between the halfpenny tokens and all the other stuff around it's usually pretty easy to find at least a few a hunt. Georgies and the older stuff is a bit tougher.

Way to go on the bayonet, :headbang:
Where's it going, rusty iron finds pile, or might clean it up when bored this winter pile?

Is that a brown bess bayonet ?

I would think it must be from a musket given the age of the rest of the finds. (I don't know gun parts well)

Re: Buttons, a Bayonet & 15 crusty coppers!

Just before I logged on I was thinking that you and IH were due for a hunt and bang the first one I see is yours...
Congrats on the great finds...I love that bayonet, it would make my day especially with some nice early seals. Your bayonet is even better shape than mine...I'm sure a whole one is out there but would be rare....

To be complete you'd have to dig it deep in a ploughed field.

Yep, I'd say that's close enough! Doesn't seem like I'm missing too much off the tip so I'll call it a keeper.

That is a first-class haul, IP. I was thinking Brown Bess on the bayonet also, but there are so many variants and such from that period that I could be off on that one.

I really like the bayonet and the lead seal. And the coppers ain't bad neither. :icon_thumright:

Are you going to electrolysis-ize it up? (the bayonet) Highly worth it, IMHO.

Yep, plan on cooking all my iron this Winter.

Sweet diggin! A bayonet is on my wish list. Congrats! :hello2:

Re: Buttons, a Bayonet & 15 crusty coppers!

Way to go on the beautiful bayonet, i've been hoping to find one for years. I'm suprised that you didn't find any military buttons, maybe because the site dates to the 1800s?. Your early sites usually give up a rev. war button, was their much military activity during the mid 1800s in your area?.

James I can't explain it, early military used to find me! But now I can dig 35 buttons like yesterday and get nothing. I kid you not my numbers are probably 10% for this year compared to my better ones. I'm not at all complaining about my year (ok just a little) because it has been great in many other ways. I've dug several firsts so that is cool. It's looking like we have maybe one more kick at the can but might be doing it with white on the ground. Have to see how it goes.

Just different taste and trust me, what I condsider great doesn't happen too often so I am pleased with the bayonet and seal.

It was fun but crusty coins and plain buttons are pretty common here. I'd rather find one good marked military than 1000 plain ones.

That penny token is really good condition
