Wood-back gilt buttons date back to the 18th Century. The 4 photos are of 18th &19th Century wood-back buttons. Wood can preserve for 100s of years on a artifacts in proper conditions and soil. It is somewhat common when you are digging a good Civil War hut site out 4-5 feet deep to come across a very small piece of lumber that is decomposing or basically became petrified that is covered in ash material that was used in the hut site over 150 years ago. I think this button could date to about the 1850s- turn of the century!

The third photo is of a Revolutionary War Gilt Bullseye wood-back button

4th is of Revolutionary War French 29th Regiment Officers Button
