This find looks to be a circa 1810-1840 flat button. It most likely would have been worn by a civilian, not military. Buttons with raised back marks are usually slightly older than those with indented back marks. These buttons were typically made in London because the newly formed America could not produce enough buttons fast enough to satisfy demand but London could. These buttons were phased out to two piece buttons in around 1840. It most likely would have had gilt (gold plated) on it at one point but now most is gone due to corrosion, but some can probably be visible with navel jelly. The backmarks on your button look to tell the quality of the button, based on what I can see it says "colour" which probably is talking about the gilt, the back mark probably says "Yellow Colour" or "Orange Colour". Notice the English spelling of the word color, that shows that it was made in London or England. Very nice find, I love finding old buttons like that, I hope you and your friend find more.
Coinman123,
On the backmark: I believe enough can be seen to determine that it includes "Treble Gilt" (treble meaning triple)
ringking,
Here's a great link to Buckleboy's button cleaning thread. Has been a great help to me in the past.
