Me and 2 buddies secured a new permission in one of the oldest towns in Massachusetts, it’s got 4 old home sites and a few barn sites. Most of it is fields and orchards with some dense woods. Any way, the first day out 2 of us only spent about 2 hours in a freshly cut field. We found the usual stuff, buckles, buttons, a large cent, 2 cent piece and a IHP. Yesterday, we spent all day hitting one of the bigger fields, my buddy found a sterling fire department badge thing, I’ll post a picture when I get it sent over, but it is absolutely stunning, old style fire wagon, old style eagle etc. Aaaaannnyway, we were using XP Deus ll’s and a XP Deus l. With deep programs and going really slow in the heavy iron foot print the building left behind. Everything seems to be mid 1800’s, my buddy got a 2 piece Massachusetts militia button that came up in 2 pieces but pretty good condition considering. I was detecting a low spot to the side of the foot print when I got a really deep 86 on my Deus ll, it was repeatable from all sides but had some iron grunt to it and the ground was very moist. I flipped over my plug and the signal changed to a 36. I thought I got fooled by a square nail as I couldn’t locate the signal with my pin pointer, I was just about to say f*** it and replace the plug when my pin pointer sounded off. I dug my target out of the side wall and saw a little purplish disc, at first to though it was a tombac button by at closer inspection it said “ one dime”, flipped it over and revealed a very nice seated dime. It’s an 1848, this coin was only minted in Philly, with a mintage of 451,500. Funny thing about low mintage seated coins is they don’t command the price as a 1916-D Mercury dime even with lower mintage. A few years back, I dug a 1874-S seated dime , low mintage but not very collectible for whatever reason.
