i don't know if this belongs here but i am thinking a lot of you tnetters might enjoy as many artifacts were made from the great Tatonka (buffalo)
the horns and skulls, the scapula (shoulder blades used for hoes and shovels, squash knives, spoons, scrapers,
the ribs were used to make arrow shaft wrenches, the ribs were also used for making sled runners and stakes, the skulls were used for ceremonials,
the meat was used and used to make pemmican, the hides were used for clothing, sheltering and to make the round boats to navigate the missouri river and other waters,
and many other things which most of you already know IMG_0079.jpg

this is a few pictures that my sister in law Tamakewastewin LaDonna took the other day just north of fort yates up towards cannonball where a nice buffalo ranch is
this is south of Mandan north dakota she likes being able to watch them as she drives to work at the Standing Rock Sioux reservation, she is the director of tourism
this is a picture of the buffalo bull boats
when i was a kid they had a real one at the nd state museum and i would always look at it

Hey Larson,

Right as rain to show.

I love to see them "big woolies" back on the plain. Even if it is only here and there for now.

We have been to "Black Hills" several times and have seen the big boys plowing snow over at Custer State Park.

I enjoy the TV clip (nat'l Geo) or something where the mozon follows too closely and invades the big bulls space and gets his dumb butt launched into the tree top. Hilarious!

Token revenge for all the buffalo hunters.

BW

Thanks Larson,
I think it belongs here, that last picture is simply amazing, really tells a story, great post and thank you!!

That boat is amazing. That is one animal that grew a culture. I am glad you share it with us. Hard to imagine their range was most of the USA at one time.

glad you tnetters like this

ever had a buffalo burger?
the best

There's something about the beast...being fortunate enough to live near the Tallgrass preserve, I love every chance I get to go up there. The herd is a few thousand now, and they roam pretty much all over. Charmin can describe it so much better, lucky girl!! I believe I've read where Washington Irving crossed the Arkansas river in one of those hide boats, during his tour of the prairie...My husband pumps a lease on the preserve, and I decided I had to have a plaster cast of a footprint, sooooo I foolishly walk to the pond to get one, while the bison were on the other side of the pond. My heart just pounded the whole time! what a rush! here is my version of an "American Bison",004.JPG

Buckshot and I made two bronzes of the skull, one plain, one with the flag, when the Osage artist we worked for said he'd like to have one, I asked which one, and he looked side ways at me, said the plain one, and kinda growled that the other one "wasn't his tribe"..very important animal in this country.

when i was about ten yrs old i saw a mount of a 'cattalo' (buffalo-cattle cross)
the idea worked but it polluted most of NA's pure buffalo breeds
fortunately we still have some pure dna'd buffalo herds
and ND might be one of the most prolific
anybody that never had a 98% lean buffalo burger don't know what they are missing
buffalo has lb for lb twice the protein, half the fat, and half the colesterol of beef..........................and tastes twice as good
i may be getting this thread ruined now but........ just sayin"
no wonder the buffalo and great gardening skills the mandans had helped them survive the ugly winters
