Deep into the woods and the AT-PRO blasted a loud 83 at ten inches down. I carefully extracted this brass plate that still has a number of brass tinkler's still attached. 22 in total. Sweet, I'm glad you got at least one, but I can understand how you would feel ill about throwing the others away. Does it have a makers mark on it? I once threw away a French & Indian War era iron strike-a light, and felt ill about it after learning what it was. I couldn't imagine how I would feel in your shoes, although I would feel pretty good about the tinkler plate and the silver arm/wrist band that you do have.

One of the best and most interesting banners in awhile IMO! Congrats on an AWESOME find!

In post #12 on the first page of this thread I posted a link with some info about these tinklers. Check it out!

There is some good information on tinklers in post 12. Basically they are like bells, but without the clapper/dangling thingy. They would ding or chime when they bumped against each other. They were made pretty much coast to coast out of deer toe bones during prehistoric times, and when brass and copper became available via trade it was a very common usage for little scraps of metal. In Michigan you'll see prehistoric copper ones, but the brass ones date to from contact to removal (1600's with tribes from NY & Canada being pushed out of their traditional areas by the Iroquois to early 1800's.)

I've seen some hafted on sticks or clubs like rattles (I think they were in John Baldwin's collection.) I haven't seen one hafted on a brass base like that, so my guess is that this was a pretty darned special piece that was a rattle of some type. It's seriously worth having it looked at and preserved by a museum because the tinklers will probably fall off over time.

The Sauk were one of the groups in Michigan, and they were well known for dancing. Lots of artists who drew or painted Native American life captured images of the Sauk dancing. Any one of the spears or clubs pictured could have had a set of tinklers added in for more effect. (Most of the really artistic gun clubs and lances/spears were more ornamental than actual weaponry.)

AMAZING!
You found what I dig for.. History. I enjoy the research to find sites and especially the research to find what I've dug and TN is a great resource for that.I learned a bunch just like you did about your find because you shared it with us. I think I would have figured it was a wind chime as well, so learning the truth is even more special and important.
Great find! Thanks for sharing so that we could all enjoy the thrill of the find.
WTG, and we'll be looking for more from your coil. Congrats on the banner, well deserved.

LATE TO THE PARTY BUT THATS A SUPER FIND, CONGRATS

That is some kind of something else! I'm glad there's a ton of knowledge here, 'cause I would've been clueless. Damn neat artifact now that I know what it is. Truly remarkable find!

Here in CA, the contact period indians got "trinkets" as trade items too. But in all my time hunting such sites, have only found perhaps 3 that I would call "tinklers". So they must've been more of a mid-west states indian practice. Congratz on banner !

Truly unique and historic save!

I learn so much from all of you! I read with interest the information about the tinkler and am fascinated. WONDERFUL recovery. So how do I vote "Banner" using the TNet app? I don't see that option!

Congratulations on your amazing find and BANNER achievement mk! :occasion14:
It's always nice when I can learn about something new about fur trade relics.

I I think it's the little red icon (button) present on an individual post...I think.

Thanks. I do not see a red icon (button) in the app for iphone. Maybe I have to be on the website to get the full options. This post of the tinkled now has gotten the "banner" distinction, so I am not seeing a way to vote banner in the site either. Thanks for responding, and I think I have to be out of the app and on the main website to get the little icon. Much appreciated.

I've got fur trade silver broaches, rings etc. and that is one of the neatest things I've seen in a long while. Good for you !

Very cool and unique find! The fact that these were found all together is pretty incredible. Almost certainly date to the 17th century and would be rare to be an isolated find. Bet there's a contact period site if not right there, super close by. Find anything else in the vicinity?
