I got permission to detect a site in Connecticut last week where a 1700's house was being torn down. Alot of the area had been cleared of trees or bulldozed already. I did pretty good with 15 buttons of various types (including a two piece eagle), 3 coppers including a 1776 KGIII, a bell, etc.

My most exciting find was a brass epaulette found about 30 feet out in back of the house and about 8 inches deep. It was in an area that hadn't been bulldozed yet. Of course, it was in pieces but seems to be fairly complete. The upper shoulder scale has some damage but nothing that can't be straightened out.

I need help with identification and dating ie model or vintage. I was guessing 1840's but I'm no authority. (ask me about a bayonet I'll tell you - an epaulette? No.)

Thanks, Bruce

Awesome Hunt! I'd say your probably right on the dates. They do turn up in CW camps as well.

We've found the exact same epaulette and scales from those pattern epaulettes at Second Seminole War sites here in Florida (1835-1842).

Sweet hunt for sure!!! I found a nearly identical bell on my last hunt. Great finds.

I have one I dug in DC about 10 years ago that's the same, CW era fort nearby. It's enlisted according to the books.
